  • How to get +5GB of storage space in DropBox.

Hey guys, I just tested this and it worked.
Since it helped me a lot and not many people know about it I decided to post it here.
    "What's DropBox?"
First of all, if you don't know what DropBox is or if you want to get one for yourself click this link for an explanatory video.

How to get the extra 5GB:
(only for DropBox users - click here to become one)

This will only be possible while they are testing a new version of DropBox, by using it you will be helping them, and that's why they give you the 5GB. Don't worry, it is safe, but they do recommend that you make a backup of the files you have in their site just in case.
You will need a phone or a camera that is connectable to your computer to get this bonus (edit: a usb flash drive will do as well).
This works in every OS, but some tips will be only for windows users (because that's what I use).
Here is what you have to do (skip step 1 if you are already a DropBox user):

    Step 1:

    Create a DropBox account.

    Step 2:

After you have created your DropBox account, download the new Dropbox beta. Here are the links:

    Step 3:

Enable Windows auto-play. This is enabled in windows by default, but if you are like me and you don't like it you have probably disabled it long ago. Here is how to make sure it is enabled:

In Windows Vista, open Control Panel and choose AutoPlay. In the top you can see a check box "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices". Check this and choose "Save"
In Windows 7, open control panel, go to hardware and sound section and choose Auto Play. You can see an option in the top "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices". Check it to enable autoplay.

Don't worry, after you have the bonus storage you can disable it again.

    Step 4:

Connect your phone or camera to your computer and chose "upload images/videos to DropBox" in the autoplay menu.

Update: I just found out a much easier way. Just create a folder in a USB flash drive named "DCIM" and put a 4.5GB+ video there. Then remove your flash drive and insert it again. Since "DCIM" is usually the folder where cameras and phones store images/video, the option to upload them with DropBox will pop up! lol

How you will get the bonus:

As you upload the first image you will instantly get 500MB. Then, For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total (add that to the 500MB from the first picture and you have 5GB).
Note: If you are like me and don't have 5GB of photos/video do what I did: leave your phone recording video in the top quality for a few hours lol you will get 5GB for sure.

    Useful notes:
    • Clients 1.3.5 and earlier had an auto-update bug. Please install this version so that your client will stay up to date!
    • The photo import feature is not available on Mac 10.4 and Linux.
    • For Android devices, it's best to use "Connect as Disk Drive". HTC Sync will not work.
    • To import from iPhone, make sure to unlock your phone and enter your passcode before importing, otherwise it will claim to find no photos.
    • If importing from your iPhone on Mac gives an import error, try hard resetting it--hold down the power and the home button for 5 seconds.
    • This will reboot the phone; it shouldn't change your settings or delete data.
    • On Windows, this feature relies on Autoplay. Please enable Autoplay to use this feature if you have disabled it.
    • On XP and Vista, it relies on the Windows Image Acquisition Service. If this service is not started, please start the service and reinstall Dropbox to use this feature. On WIndows Server, you may have to install the Desktop Experience feature.
    • On Windows 7, newer devices that rely on Device Stage (in the Control Panel) will not show Dropbox as an import option until you select "Change Program" for the default.
    • The Galaxy Nexus takes a lot of time to connect on OS X because it likes to pretend that every image on the device is a photograph. We now estimate how long it's going to take and show you that in the progress bar but it's usually in the order of minutes. We're working to see if this can be improved.

    That's it!
Enjoy you free 5GB of DropBox storage!

Please don't post in this thread unless you can add something to the tutorial or to say if it worked/didn't work for you.

Edit: bentemer this was not for you, it was because of a spammer who posted "thanks" in many tutorials.

So, thanks for this, I didn't know about this, thanks for the tip-off it bumped my fairly old account up from 2.7GB to 7.7GB :-D. However I decided to do things my way.. I also found, an "exploit" if you can call it that, to get your 5GB much quicker than having to upload 5GB of data.

              So how?

Easy! Follow the quick and brief instructions below (I'm very tired). They were tested on a laptop I nicked off someone to boost my total storage as I do not have windows.. so I just used theirs.. anyhow's..

(PS: Yes i gave them back their laptop after....)

Firstly if you read the rules it states quite simply the following:

First picture you upload will give you an instant 500MB this can be done from camera, memory card or phone.

So get your memory card out! Stick a single photo on it, and follow instructions above to automatically upload the photo, once it is done, you are now boosted by 500MB. Now for the rest you have to upload 4.5GB right? Wrong!

Empty your memory stick again. Now put 600MB of pictures on it. Put it back in your windows machine, and let it begin uploading them. While it is uploading ensure all files have at least started to upload. (so leave it a couple of minutes, and ensure all files are physically fully in your dropbox folder. as in, it has been fully imported from your camera/memorystick. ) now while it is uploading DELETE them. You will now be notified you have an extra 500MB of free space.

If you are like me, you have more porn movies than photos then empty your memory stick, put a 600/700MB movie on it. Let dropbox detect it, import them, and begin automatically uploading. Let it upload for a couple of minutes, then delete it, again you will be notified that you have more space, and repeat process until you have your 5.0GB extra free space! Enjoy

Please be aware all movies have to be unique, and please don't forget to securely wipe your memory card of all those porn movies you used to do this. I'm sure your grandma or parents or what ever, do not want to plug in your camera and find porn!

PS: This will probably get patched if they read this post... also, this could be dangerous, while I never had any problems, it may cause problems for you, do this at your own risk!

              Quick Q&A:
Will dropbox be able to see I did this? Probably, yes. But either way, you still technically test the feature they asked, you just stopped it uploading to save your bandwidth as you did not want those files in your dropbox account, right?

Well, no matter how much storage space you have atm, I believe having X + 5GB is always better than just having X lol

I'd like to add another nice trick where you can get this bonus WITHOUT even uploading 5GB of data.

Instead of actually uploading 5GB you can use a 4.5GB image file that's already indexed by dropbox so the file itself doesn't have to be uploaded from your PC to dropbox.
It's something quite similar to "hash-checking" where a file is recognized via "magic" ;)

Dropbox actually does that all the time to prevent high redundancy and duplicity of files. It is what keeps them competitive because the don't actually need the whole drive space that all users combined appear to be requiring.

So you either get the 4.5GB image file from the archive https://dl.dropbox.com/s/ld9r45kob94..._1559.rar?dl=1 (it's NOT a virus) and put it on your USB thumb drive, SD card or similar (it has to be more than 4GB obv) and let dropbox do its thing.
It'll index it but it won't upload it, but it will magically appear in your account after indexing it.

Another nice trick, if yo don't have a thumb drive, SD card or smart phone with the proper space requirement, you can use this ISO file and mount it: https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hrulfaib9fo...hi7s7.rar?dl=1

Simply extract the ISO file to your hard drive and mount it with your favorite mount tool (I use Virtual CloneDrive).
                    Then let dropbox import it.

You can delete the file from the "Camera Upload" folder after you get the bonus.

Its not meant to replace your hard drive or anything. LOL

I've got 10gb now, its great for not having to transfer small files via usb stick. I do alot of work stuff and programming in dropbox. I also run my /www file from dropbox and have wamp setup on all my PC's so i can just run wamp and goto localhost no matter what PC i am on, its great!

Theres also a website PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives which has some great tools that i have installed into dropbox so i can run them from any PC im on and still have all my settings.

NightFlyer, that's not supposed to happen o.O I've never seen anything like that.
Seems like your storage space did not increase and the file still uploaded, leaving you with 220% of your space used I didn't even know that was possible.

Did you follow the OP. You must use the import feature from the "auto play" function, simply putting it into the dropbox won't work.
You also have to use the forum beta, it doesn't work with the normal one.

Maybe the problem is your too small dropbox, goto my thread and request 2GB giveaway dropbox-epeen-extension!

                              That can't be the problem.
This should add 500MB for the first file and 500MB for each 500MB uploaded, therefore no matter how much space you have it should work.
