  • Bitsoup :: News (New Donation Meter!)

    It's finally here!

After many years of being asked repeatedly for a donation bar, or some sort of onsite feature for our members to track our monthly progress on site funding, we have willingly added such a feature to help our members!

On our Home Page you can always see where we are as a site on our monthly cost and fundraising.

This meter is not kept in real time as it would simply be too much to tie it into all the donation scripts and all, and we would need it connected to a few offsite things that the site should be no part of, but will be updated every couple days as our numbers get crunched during normal site procedures and processes.

You asked for one, now here it is.. please use it as we've always been told it would be.

Thank you all for your support, suggestions and ideas.
We are striving to listen to our community and give you all what you need!

    Bitsoup and 2014!

July 2014 was by far the scariest month Bitsoup has ever had to deal with. We were 2 weeks away of being forced to make changes to Bitsoup that would forever affect our great site. Because so many members helped when we needed it most, it has made it quite hard to offer any promo now that will attract a decent amount of donations.

I stand here today with only a few options what to do. Some say make Bitsoup a pay site. Others say offer a leech package that donating a $ amount will get wide open access to Bitsoup content. I don't think we need to go down those roads. but today we stand at not even 30% of what we need to break even this month and without even having any buffer.

At least the monies collected July & August brought our bills up to date. Today we had a outage that took down our main DB Box. While we're currently running smooth on the backup server the Fall Fundraiser was deployed early to try and shore up funds to upgrade gear. Well, I'm sad to say it didn't work.

We will keep things going as normal between now and end of 2014, but if things don't change for the better, we will have to make some changes in 2015 as I cant afford to keep covering the costs of Bitsoup without proper monthly support from you the member. The very same members that use the site and our service.

We are tired of begging for funding, as everyone knows how great Bitsoup is. I'd hate to close the doors, but will in 2015 if our community doesn't change.

Thanks to the contributions and countless hours of hard work put in by many, many people, over the past 9yrs. Bitsoup has grown and developed into a wonderful sharing community, where aside from lots of torrents, lots of "friendly faces" can be found. Much of this depends on the time and hardworking efforts many people have given Bitsoup, but all of it depends on the donating support that we are given by our members. Without donations, none of this is even possible!

I'm opening a forum in the general chat forum where Earlybird and I will have listed the choices we feel are best practical that have been laid out over 2014 from all of the recent discussions about these issues from our members. It will be opened to everyone to talk about which roads we should take to get out of this issue. You'll want to participate when the thread is opened as the top most wanted new changes will indeed be taking place come 2015. You know what they say... you don't vote, you have nothing to complain about!

Come Join us in the forums to talk about the financial future of Bitsoup.

Click Here to enter the discussion

While everyone is welcome to speak about the life of Bitsoup moving forward or about its past, I'm warning people now that abuse and or attacks towards staff or this site will not be tolerated. While many feel freedom of speech is a self-right, this is still a private site, therefore while we embrace the freedom of speech, attacking Bitsoup will not happen.

@noAH78 this is not news it is an announcement on a Tracker seeking donations. This area is to post something that dramatically impacts the BT community as a whole ie; a major Tracker closing, a well sought after Tracker giving invites or opening its door etc..

Stop posting everyday announcement in this area this includes announcement for donations, freeleech announcement etc.. as they will be considered spam and too much spam can cause you to run into problem on the Forum. Thank you for your understanding

        Bitsoup News

The Future of Bitsoup Bitsoup will not close down 100%. We already have a backup resource ready to step in that will allow some of our members to gain access in the event Bitsoup does not meet its bill payment by 12pm est today. With the donations that came in over the weekend we need 20% to cover the bill. The provider has giving us a final 72hrs to pay the balance. We are so close lets get it done by Wed 12pm noon. Due to the backup gear being less than half of what we normally run, the server loads will not allow us to run at full capacity. While we do not want to block anyone from using Bitsoup, members who help pay the bills must always come first. Therefore, starting with Platinum and above, then VIP, will be the first classes with access to the site if we have to downsize. Then Power User, and so on. Power users will only be allowed onto the site as allowed by the hardware load. It will have to be this this way until such time the bills are paid and main site access is restored. If a membership expires during the restricted period, you may unfortunately loose access until the site reopens to the public. None of this needs to happen if we see a few members to buy us some breathing room and get us into 2015 where we can look at other income sources. We are 20% away from covering the the bandwidth bill then we have to get the November bills paid. Again, if just a small percentage of people donate who have not already done so, all this can be avoided and could even be avoided in the future with your continued support. Please help us get through this hard time. We had the same issue back in July and members were there to step up. Now is even more of an issue as this is busy season on the site and tons of content to come out for all of us to enjoy. To date, we have already stated we had to use many different forms of promotions to increase the donor pool. Many people have seen the downfall of such promo's have come to the surface for Bitsoup. Far too many members have way to much credit and no need/desire to get more so they don't think they need or should donate any longer. This just isn't true as we need donations every month, not just when we run specials. I will not continue to beg for support, but I will not let Bitsoup close either. If I have to make some major changes to stay on-line I will. Its all up to you the members. 24hrs from now will tell us how important Bitsoup is to its members. Therefore its very important to every single person on Bitsoup that we can achieve the goal over the next 2 days. And more importantly, for every month to come. So please consider the loss of Bitsoup when you ponder the choice to donate or not. Bitsoup is in the hands of you the member. Without you there is no Bitsoup. Without Bitsoup there are no members. Without Bitsoup all your credit is worthless

Bitsoup News : Site Updates December 2014!

          Security Changes
          Bitsoup SSL Protocol

          - The site should be directing all traffic now to use SSL (HTTPS) url
          - All new .torrent files download, including RSS, should also be using our SSL tracker instead of our UNsecured, UNencrypted normal tracker. This tracker will be completely turned off in 2015, so please make all the appropriate changes in your clients for older torrents by right-clicking each torrent and changing the url to HTTPS, or re-downloading the .torrent file from the site.
          - You should look at your browser address bar to see if you're logged into our secure site. If not, please logout and back into our HTTPS url
          - You should also check any older site links you have bookmarked to make sure they too are using the HTTPS url.

          Personal Changes
          Profile Settings
          - Your profile settings page has been reworked to be more user friendly including grouped subject matter and better help text
          - Check it out HERE
          - Please check to see if your avatar works, if not please delete the dead link. You're simply causing your own site to load slower.
          Park Notice
          - Better notice with direct link for you to unpark
          - This will be important as we don't delete accounts for inactivity any more, but will park your account instead. Based on your account status we will save your inactive account for up to 1yr once our suspension program takes effect. Currently all accounts are left enabled and stored for 2 years.

          General Changes
          Site Header
          - Site header height restriction has been removed so the site will scale better at different resolutions
          - This also speeds up page loads
          Funding Meter
          - Funding meter will now be updated daily to keep better track of where we are. This will be extremely important come 2015 when the site will be restricted until funding is met
          - There is now a convenient donation button under the meter that takes you to the promo forum so you never miss anything we have to offer at any given time. However, promos will be much more scarce come 2015 with only normal donation methods and memberships being the norm.

          Currently Being Worked On
          Custom Avatars
          - We've been working really hard the last couple months to get this back on track and reopened. We're almost there thanks to a few very talented people amongst us. When it initially reopens, it will be available to all PCVIP only until we strengthen our Design Team.
          FAQ
          - Our FAQ is a constant updated feature as processes and procedures change, but we're working on including a better Q&A for the most talked about and asked questions regarding the donation process and operation cost.
          Peer and Uploader Anonymity
          - Peer list will be changed for member security to a totally anonymous list without links to your profile
          - Uploaders will also be protected, unless they wish to be known. This will be up to them.
          Suspension Program
          - Accounts have always simply been deleted in the past providing members stopped using them. However, we're implementing a suspension program where your account will go into limbo for a disclosed amount of time allowing you to retrieve it.
          - A donation will be asked of you to fully unlock your account upon returning. Dupe accounts will be treated as normal and all accounts will be banned when found. This ban may include the member that invited you; especially if they've invited you twice.
          - Be sure to park or keep your account active if you're not going to use it for longer than the active account policy, which can be found in our FAQ and will be updated.
          - You will have 45 days to log into the site at least once to keep you account active. And as always, seeding, client activity and/or RSS WILL NOT count towards keeping your account active. The tracker and the site are 2 separate things.
          - Complete details will be provided once we're ready to roll it out.
          Site Restrictions Due to Under-Funding
          - Details and processes are still being worked out so please do not ask.
          - Complete details will be made known at the appropriate time.
          - Although we have gave an initial warning, and we hope that is all it takes (history tells a different tale however), we will announce what needs to be done exactly before the first restriction takes place. I would suggest just doing the right thing and continue to support your site, securing your account for anything that may happen to come your way.

There was an announcement on the site restrictions due to under-funding (should have saved it so I could post here). Basically they said that if donations are not met on a monthly basis there would be restrictions placed on users who do not donate. Once funding has been met restrictions will be lifted (and any over-funding would carry-over to the following month).

If they do go ahead and implement I hope their VIP/donators are also the ones seeding.

ALWAYS READ it, then DELETE it, to keep from asking questions that
are clearly answered in posts like this one.

This was sent to everyone and has no bearing on your current account status!

First we would like to apologize to those members that shouldn't have gotten some of the latest announcements we've made. Some classes are intended to receive very little of this traffic, but we're all human and things happen for whatever reason.

This has come to our attention through reports and we appreciate them dearly as that is the only way things are fixed. It has also been asked many many times recently about the promo announcements and why they get sent out everyday, etc.. So instead of trying to continue answering these inquires one at a time over and over, we're making a general announcement to all revealing how these promo schedules work and who gets what and when.

Everyone including Staff - General site updates and anything that affects the site globally and announcements directly from the site owner which normally falls under the first two things mentioned.
PCVIP - Maybe when a new promo starts, or a special that affects this class directly that we feel is to their advantage. They will not continue to get them as dailies, and PCVIP specials only once a week. This class is almost totally exempt from everything except what is outlined above and definitely from the dailies.
VIP - This is the standard VIP class and indicates that you took a promo and not a normal tier package. This class should only receive new promos when they start and one once a week normally around the weekend area, perhaps two a week depending on a few mitigating factors. This class is not totally exempt, but limited on what they receive and when.
3 tier VIPs - This class may or may not receive daily promo announcements and all depends on how funding is going and where we're sitting on the month in general. This class is not exempt from announcements.
Power Users - Not exempt from anything and will continue to get them daily
              Users - Same as PU
Leech - Pretty self explanatory for this group. You need the help anyhow, just donate to help the site and we'll help you fix your account. Our leech class-structure will be overhauled in the near future. Leechblock is a poorly designed system that can be easily exploited and will be totally disabled soon. Once this change happens and you're a leech, you won't be able to do anything but seed until you're account is corrected period.

Secondly, we would like for everyone to know that unless we spam the site every single day, donations drop off and don't come in. We wish it wasn't like this and personally I can't stand it and have better things to do with my time, then repeat all the same redundant things we go through month in and month out.

If you don't want to receive announcements, based on the above, you know what to do. However, we are also willing to STOP sending them all together to everyone provided we stay on track, but I can honestly say I don't see that happening, but provided it does we will make good on that promise. Just like we're going to make good on site restrictions when we don't.

We started the new year off with a bang with the momentum from December carrying over into January and the first week was right on track, however, as expected just like clockwork, without the constant threats and being in everyone's face, things have once again trickled to near nothing. Not even 4 donations yesterday.. this isn't gonna cut it good members. You wonder why we send them everyday and make the announcements that we do? The answer is simple.. nothing happens unless we do.

We need continued support and we will hold true to site restrictions come February unless we have January covered. It's just a simple shame, that unless we're in your face, a huge part of our members never act on their own accord and donations stop.

We crunched the numbers yesterday and we're 23% behind schedule/target. On this trajectory, we'll be down 40% by months end. Under the current internet and ISPs issues, I really don't think any of you want to try and find other means for your torrenting habits. I can guarantee you may not think it a big deal, but as always, we don't know what we have until it's gone. You're all here for a reason and it isn't because there are 100s of other great sites out there. If this isn't the case, then please move along so we can adjust our services and cater to those members that do support us and truly want to be here.

We're approaching things as nicely as we can to maintain the site in a friendly manner. Just remember who has done what when it becomes not so pleasant and the shit has to hit the fan again. That my friends is something that never has to happen and can always be prevented proactively!

              Thank you for your time...

                  NEW SITE RULE

                  Hello All,

For member and site security, topics and open discussion about donation issues and/or site issues relating to donations will only take place in our VIP forums. The following rule has been added to our site rule set; in the general section and the forum section...

Do Not talk about donation topics in the open forums. Use your VIP forums, Help Desk, or contact a member of staff.

Anyone opening up a donation discussion other than the basic question "where can I donate?" will get a warning. On the second warning, you will have your forum rights removed and possibly your account banned.

We've tried to do things the way our community wanted them, but despite all our efforts those changes have failed and the haters just won't let it happen, although they won't leave the site they hate so much either. That's just like a child; to shit in one hand and want in the other, so I guess in my opinion that's expected. In fact, they've simply made things more discrete and secure for all of us, so in a manner of speaking, we owe them our thanks.

Thank you haters for showing us where we needed to be more secure and to return to doing what we've always done in the past. We apologies to those that don't make waves, but that will be thrust back into the darkness relating to site matters.

                      Bitsoup Members!

Before I get down to business, Id like to take a moment and reach out to each and every member who heard the call that Bitsoup was and still is in financial problems.

To date we have been able to secure funding from members that have mostly paid the June bills off. However, we still need much help to cover the bills for July

As stated a few days ago we had until July 21st! to pay our internet bill. As feared because of summer not many donations came in. People assume that someone else will donate so why bother. For years people abused the services bitsoup offered and now we are paying the price for it.

The little monies we collected bought us a few more days. There will be no more extensions allowed. If we are not caught up by end of business July 27th Bitsuop will go offline for many.

There is only 72hrs left before possible shut down. We understand that some do not want to donate but it is times like this that everyone regardless of class needs to support what they enjoy to use.

You all know how hard it has been over past few months. We need all the help we can get to get through summer.

Im saying this now. In the event we are unable to pay the monies owned Bitsoup will be forced offline. PCVIP and VIP have covered for everyone else. If you enjoy bitsoup show your support.

                      Thank you.

This is not a threat. This is not a scam.

Each and every month we ask our members do support Bitsoup. Since April we have been behind in bills always trying to catch up.

August was no different except 1 thing.

This month all of our vendor's are demanding full payment or they will suspend services. I guess they are as tired as we are waiting on monies to keep this operation going. This is what I woke up to today via email. Great way to start a day.

I do not care what class each member is in. I do not care if a donation was made before.

We have done all we can to keep bitsoup alive. There are 2 Major promo's active and we are bringing in pennies.

We have 7-days before 100% closure of our site.

This is not a good time for any of this to happen. We are so close to getting past the slow summer and things always pick up in Sept.

We have been working on new idea's to bring in monies to help support the site but they are not ready to go without monies.

                        Please do not ignore this.

Other torrent sites have closed down for what ever reason. Other torrent sites are having monies issues but they are not Bitsoup.

Use the promo's if you desire.

Or just send a donation in using our donation page. If we are gone Aug 28th we will not be back.

The ball is in our members court. I have tried to make arrangements to buy us time but that time has run out.

Thank you from all the staff @ Bitsoup.

Seems that this site is attempting to monetize the site. They have always constantly badgered for donations but it seem that they are now becoming like other sites threatening their userbase with the site going down to drum up funds.

I for one do not want to be a Member of any Tracker that employs these methods to get money, reminds me of IPT. As a matter of fact they have gone beyond the shenanigans of IPT as they are suspending accounts and the only way that you can have your account removed from suspension is via donation. Sounds like extortion to me, the principle of pirating is freeware not pay for material they have no rights to profit from. This material is copyrighted material and they do not hold any rights to said material to want to make money from it.

I am of the opinion that this is another format of invite selling imo and this Tracker should be avoided like the plague. What sort of security can you feel using a Tracker that will sell you out in a heartbeat as they are in it for the mighty dollar it appears.

I do not want anyone to feel that donating to a Tracker is not cool, if you enjoy the site and feel like a donation is warranted then by all means, but when you are attempting to run a Tracker for profit then it is against everything that the BT Community stands behind. This is obviously the case in hand, they are not asking for donations they are extorting their Members for monies. I would say let BitSoup die do not support a site that is selling itself out

Their last announcement is pretty straight forward: If they don't get enough donations, they will close the site to everyone but paying members, effectively turning it into paysite. They started with begging and have now turned to intimidation to get their monies. What was once a quite good tracker turned to shit. I wish admins would just let it die already...

I would say let BitSoup die do not support a site that is selling itself out
I was searching to see if anyone had an invite to Bitsoup and found this. Wow. I can't believe they do that. Your comment is perfect in every way. They should not be allowed to extort money from users, which is exactly what they are doing.
