There is a theory that some automated hacking system is responsible for a series of threatening hoax phone calls that have disrupted classes for students in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia and even Japan. According to Australian authorities, the calls began in the end of January and were largely ignored by the local media, which were urged not to give attention to the hoaxers who threatened schools with shootings and bombs.

Nevertheless, schools in the country have been seriously disrupted, and staff, parents and children inconvenienced, as the institutions have been massively evacuated almost every day. Although it was clear that the threats were a hoax scenario, the schools had to be evacuated every time according to security procedures.

Apparently, automated hacking process required to make the calls en masse appeared to be quite sophisticated. The Australian authorities believe that there may be more than one group behind the calls, as a group of hackers dubbed “Evacuation Squad” has claimed responsibility for the calls affecting Europe, the United States, Japan and South Africa, but not Australia. In the meantime, the local police were working with Australian Federal Police and police internationally to detect the hoaxers and try to find out whether the schools’ telecommunications systems had been hacked and used to make some of the calls.

According to state and territory police, there was no cause for alarm so far, as the schools have been searched and nothing suspicious has been found. Police are warning that it is an offence to make such threats and promise to find and impose heavy penalties on those responsible. There was also no evidence that the calls were linked to terrorism.
