Virgin Media urged the British advertising regulator to crack down on broadband speed ad claims made by rivals. The Advertising Standards Authority was asked to extend its newly announced crackdown on confusing broadband pricing advertisements and scrutinize claims about speed.

The Virgin Media CEO explained that consumers need to assess both price and speed to properly compare different broadband offers. Virgin Media itself is able to offer superfast broadband through its cable network and claims that the watchdog relies on “outdated” rules for assessing broadband speed claims. It pointed out that dating back to 2011, the rules of the Advertising Standards Authority allow companies to widely advertise a headline broadband speed even if it is available to only 10% of subscribers.

Of course, sometime there are occasionally technical reasons why consumers are not able to achieve top broadband speed, but a recent research from consumer watchdog “Which?” revealed that only a small percentage of customers who got broadband from rivals hit the advertised speeds. This is why Virgin Media believes that the ASA should ensure consumers are able to compare broadband deals on the things that really matter, including speed.

In response, the advertising watchdog said that speed claims in advertisements had been a concern in the past, and that the advertising code had been beefed up to solve the problem. The ASA said it resulted in an improvement in the clarity of speed claims in ads. After the move, complaints to the ASA have fallen by half, the market has moved on, and today relatively few broadband adverts promise specific speeds.
