I still start to instinctively type torrentz into my address bar every time I go to look for something. What an awesome meta search it was.

Has anyone found a good replacement or do you guys not even use meta search?

I've used torrentproject.se and it seems to find more than zoogle, but it does have annoying ads and popups.

My university found me twice and sent warnings to me... scares me a lot ..

There is torrentz.ht that works in the same way. I think it is growing the number of public trackers it checks.
