Thread: Demonoid (DMN) Review

My membership on Demonoid is the oldest one I have on a private tracker. I love it. I remember when I first found it there were no more than 15 thousand items and now they're past 300 thousand. It's true that Demonoid doesn't have great upload speed, but usually I can find there the things I can't find anywhere else so the wait is bearable.

I completely agree, I had very similar issues. Since the torrent files are often riddled with other tracker announces, allot of the uploading is being pushed through to those other trackers (outside of Demonoid). I presume that upload-activity to those other tracker-announces are not included in the demonoid-ratio.

To get my tracker stats up, I used uTorrent to download the torrent files with all of the default configurations. As soon as it was done downloading, I disabled DHT, Local Peer Discovery, and Peer Exchange; in addition to removing the random miscellaneous collection of other tracker announces that was furled into the torrent file. Doing it this way made it so I downloaded less from Demonoid, and then seeded solely to Demonoid users. After getting the ratio back-up, I now add torrents with "Start Torrent" unchecked, and disable everything except the demonoid-announce so that I download solely from Demonoid users (to give their upload a boost) and seed solely to Demonoid users (to keep my ratio up).

The problem with that is most people wouldn't think to do that, so that problem will likely continue unchecked until the demonoid CMS/Infrastructure changes to enforce privacy in order to plug the leaks. Combined with the ip-issues, it's easy to see how ratios can spiral out of control. It's not exactly a bad tracker; there is definitely room for improvements.

The only other issue I had was it almost immediately deletes any torrent I uploaded to the site. I followed their FAQ guide for uploading torrents to the letter; again and again, it kept deleting my torrents. I finally got fed up and began to do research into every reputable private-tracker to decide where I wanted to dedicate my bandwidth to and gain access to their goods. Now here I am, beginning that process ;)

I am currently using Demonoid and as of 10/21/10 it is ridiculously fast, often in multiple megabytes for me. And I agree what others have said about them having lots of hard to find torrents. Definitely recommend!

the reason people have so many ratio problems is because it a public tracker,there's no way they could keep an accurate count,people use there demonoid-announce on every public tracker alive today.
and you seed to anyone who has the file with the demonoid-announce wether there a Demonoid member or not.

I use Demonoid only to download things that I cant find anywhere else. I dont like the fact that they dont track ratio correctly. Also there is no rules about minimum ratio. But the good thing is that you can find a lot of things.

I have been with the Green Demon for a good few years now but not used so much these days, as got my invites to other trackers! but would say the open signups once a month should have stopped by now!! Risky ;)

I also had an old account with them which I don't use anymore these days. I just doesn't like the way their torrent listed and it is down for maintenance every night. I would rather use public tracker instead of demonoid, but it's just me.

A tip to users: before downloading from another tracker, check if the torrent is up on demonoid first. Often, it is much easier to seed on demonoid than on other trackers. This can help boost your ratio.

Demonoid has just about everything, if you can stand slower speeds and updated stats.
