Default A countermeasure for spam + member's opinion on post

I dunno if any of you have ventured out on amazon.com's forums, but they have this option at the bottom of every post -

Now if there are a lot of NO's, the post is hidden. This is the general idea -

Instead of having the hidden option, we could incorporate a 'delete' command, so if many people - say out of 30 people only 3 or 5 (we can set the appropriate limits for this) think the post adds to the discussion the post (now officially considered spam) will be deleted. So the moderators will have a job less to do - the spam will be taken care of automatically, and the members here I'm sure will do their part to filter it off. Now I don't know if this will take too much work or if you think this will be too excessive for this forum, but I'd like your opinions on this nonetheless.

I guess this is a great idea..implementing this will surely restrict the users from spamming..coz if anybody's post is declared as a spam using this method, then after a number of times he might get a warning for the mods automatically..in this case a SPAM count should be set..
but also on the other side I think it will be too much restrictive coz even if the post have a slightest hint of any pointless discussion then it might be declared as a spam from few people..so in this case the poster's spam count will increase for nothing..n AMAZON implemented this coz they are focused on selling the stuff..thats why they have implemented it sitewide..
so in TI's case if we implement it only for MARKETPLACE, SUGGESTIONS and HELP and not for the remaining sections like GENERAL DISCUSSION..then it will be of good use

Actually it's in these places the spam/useless post count is considerably less. If we do implement it, it should be done everywhere, including the offtopic section - but i'd like the opinions of you guys 'cos if we do do it useless threads and posts will not stay, and it won't be that easy to increase your post count unless you actually ADD something to the conversation/topic/thread.

And not just to curb the spam. For eg, in the debate thread in the general category -

This is the debate topic -

To which one of the replies is -

    and here's another -

The second reply adds to the debate, valid points are made, but the one before, well, doesn't do much other than offer a lazy opinion (my opinion). So if we had the option we could always click 'No' to say it doesn't add to the convo. Hope you guys are seeing my point here.

Im in 100% agreement with your idea. There is countless spammed posts all over the thread, now I understand some users really wanna be able to access the higher level ga's but spamming 30threads in 30min is a little too much. With this method I think spam will be cut out dramatically. I also think if we add other things on top of this idea we can practically eliminate spam altogether. Adding this, plus adding A Week to Mid level forum access, some restricted access all ultimately discourages spam. Great idea Eschaton

I would be concerned about the automatic warning of it. I could see someone posting something unpopular, then having people go and flag all of their posts as spam whether they are or not. I think a moderator is needed to determine if someone is spamming or not. Other than that, I love the ideas in this thread. I'm going to guess it is a lot of work to implement, so I don't think we will be seeing it any time soon.

An excellent idea but what should the number of (votes) to get a post deleted be ? i think 19 is too much regarding that there are threads dosen't have high number of views , also , shouldn't this be connected wth negative rep ? instead of just deleting the post u can give a warning..

what about new members ? how would they know about this ? if it's gonna be added to the rulez then it's ok , but there are enough rulez already ,,

i think it's an excellent idea but the way of forcing it is what am concerned abt

    u have my vote

I personally think there is too high of a chance of this sort of thing being abused. Ive seen it happen on Youtube countless times.

Also, I'm not sure sure vbulletin has a mod for this.

Well YouTube has tens of millions of users while this community is a little smaller.

I think this is a great idea. Is vbulletin able to be coded by the admin?

The general discussion areas (computers, gaming, music, etc) are filled with too many boring posts. It takes away half of the forum, in my opinion, when half of the posts are one-word replies.

The thing about youtube is that it's way too accessible and they have tons of flame wars, so it's abused to hell. Amazon has it totally under control, but then again you could say that the posters a bit more, ummm what's the word; civilized? I'm sure if it's implemented and managed well it will make the forum cleaner, and bring up much more interesting conversations. My concern is will coding it be problematic, and do you think it'll add too much responsibility on the you guys, i.e. the mods/admins? I know that you already have your hands full, so it's totally up to you.

Absolutely. It's why I don't venture there much - even if you do post something remotely intelligent it's very likely it won't be read; forget being replied to. Just check the movies and tv section atm, except Chunky's sticky there isn't a single thread that's inviting.

I've just suggested a general idea, if it is considered the numbers will have to be discussed - i think something like 10 no's is reasonable.

In fact, if you look at any other forum other than the giveaway section and the suggestion forum, it's incredibly boring. Many users don't contribute to conversation which I think is a key part to being part of a forum, especially one that requires an application.
