Default Subsections in the Computing Section

I have sent multiple PMs to multiple Admins, but had no response, so here's attempt 2... by creating a thread about it.

I want to divide the Computing Section up into different sections. This will make it easier to navigate, easier to mod, and less cluttered. Here was what I was thinking.

Software - Help or request help for software problems, or just discuss popular software. Have OS prefixes so people can filter for problems on different OSes. Post news about new software. Post software recommendations.

Hardware - Help or request help for hardware problems, or just discuss popular hardware. Have hardware category prefixes so people can filter for problems on different hardware categories. Post news about new hardware. Post hardware recommendations.

Flame Area - The computing section is full of flames, This vs That threads, etc, etc... let's dump them all in one place, so people who don't want to see them don't have to.

Also, any one word answers that are not in the Flame Area I can delete on sight, unless they are genuinely useful, which most of them aren't.

Absolutely not. This ain't an IT forum (but I believe you might get such impression moderating this section only), but TI forum. I've seen such things on other boards (some of which I moderated / administered myself) and I'm telling you it's only gonna be a mess up making T-I geeks life harder as it get more complicated to navigate (yours too as now you'll have to move threads, etc.), will bring confusion + subsections are always less dynamic. Let the threads flow.

    'Keep it simple, stupid.'

OK, but what should we do with all those "This vs That" threads? Some days, it's all you can see on the first page, and a few people have mentioned it as being annoying.

Well.. you're the mod - you tell me :] The problem is common for all sections, pointless threads that is (VS ones are just a drop in the ocean and they're not just in Computers). But that's the consequence of having an Off-topic section. Only rules change ("Pointless threads like .... will be deleted") can help it 'cause either you wipe it out or let it be. People are people, you gotta realize they consider it fun and fun is what make ppl stay. If we wanted only hardcore users here that already grown up from stuff like this, there wouldn't be many left of us (but sometimes it's not about being mature, sometimes it's just boredom!). Off-topic sections of all forums are full of garbage threads, even in closed communities like Waffles.

Yeah, I'm just trying to get ideas, that's all Just because I mod that section, doesn't mean I shouldn't get other people's ideas as well :001_tongue:

The main problem is that OPs don't specify whether their thread should be for one word answers or detailed replies. I made a sticky about it, but new threads aren't changing. I'll just have to leave useless threads be, and make sure they are combined, to minimize clutter.

Anyway, thanks for the info... it's helped.

Yeah, duplicated threads are another problem. They don't use search, they don't read stickies.. But that's how it goes when you're in charge, gotta livwe with the noobs ;) Have a look at this to cheer up:
