It disturbed me at the very beginning as well (low contrast is never good), however with time I started seeing the advantages: 1) You may simply emphasize something by coloring it white - I happen to do that from time to time. 2) If all text was white by default, the contrast would be too big (black text on white background feels natural, but white text on black kicks you in the eyes and is not comfortable to read, that's why it needs to be grayed out). So, if any change will be considered, this cannot be switching to #fff - it has to stay gray, maybe just a little brighter.
