Default Suggestion: Require registration to view forums?

Unless you really really want everything to be indexed by search engines?

The sites people are offering invites for here require registration to browse so why shouldn't you?

I realise the areas which are publicly viewable are considered non-sensitive, but still....

From the 'How did you find us?' thread it seems lots of people find this site via Google, which strikes me as being both good & bad.

Well I think it's good that members can see the forum before registering. So they can know if this is a place for them or not, as it's not just about begging for invites.

As for being found through google - i'm not sure what you are worried about. There is nothing illegal on this site, and it may help to attract new members.

    What do you think?

But it's largely about this not? And we could show unauthenticated users the Offtopic forum etc, it's the presence of the particularly torrent-related stuff which I'm a little uncomfortable with.

Feels like a bit of a grey area. It could be construed that this site is facilitating something illegal about as easily as it could that torrent sites are (both are effectively just pointing people to content).

*shrugs* Only counts for so much really, but I think it's fun to be obscure: you don't have to give everything away. I'm sure people will still find this site, and that many of torrent site admins would be more comfortable with it this way.

Getting new people into these sites is a good thing but one does hope for a certain quality of invitee... My worry is that not being obscure enough might make it more likely that bad users get in, though ensuring the quality of the userbase is probably a lot more complicated than this.

I think a lot less user would get in if they weren't able to scan the forum a bit before they had to join. I know I wouldn't have done so if I couldn't look at some thing I wanted to see. =)

well i'm new here and i found this site through google so i can say that if i hadn't been able to look through the forums, i would have thought this was just another site where people go around spamming and begging for invites.

it was only after browsing through the threads that i realized this site was more about establishing yourself and helping others out, so others will help you out if they find you trustworthy. i don't think i'd have joined if i hadn't been able to look through the existing threads.

    just my two cents worth.

Requiring a registration might even lead to more stupid begging and complaining in all the wrong places. I think it is fine the way it is. It keeps those who don't really like or get the site from posting.
