Default Thread Bumping and Post Counts

Please forgive my ignorance for the following if it's A.) been discussed before (the forum is difficult to search for a word like 'bump') or B.) bumps are not counted in post counts.

I just looked through a thread that someone posted requesting an invite a few months ago, and they have subsequently bumped it every day or two since then, for a total of 62 consecutive bumps. Why does T-I allow this frequent (excessive?) bumping?

I've seen a few giveaways that require a certain post count, e.g. "200 posts" to qualify. It seems to me that the most effective way for a person to increase their post count is to make a request that will not be easily fulfilled, and then bump it ad infinitum every few days. Are there no rules governing this? Perhaps I just didn't see them, but it seems broken to me.

It also means that potentially quality posts get buried under threads that people have no interest in but are being bumped to the top by the OP over and over again.

    I completely agree,
I've seen these topics also and to be honest they are a little annoying.

I thought that the Request section didn't count for post count. If it counts, it shouldn't.

I understand your concern. Members are allowed to bump their threads once a day. The thinking behind bumping is to keep an active giveaway thread visible. The area51 forums are popular and if there hasn't been any replies to a particular GA thread for a few days it can easily be buried five or ten pages back where many members won't find it.

Also not all posts count towards your post total. As the FAQ explains:

Note: Posts in some sections may not count, so don't be surprised. Don't ask where exactly. Does it matter when you really have something to say?

We don't specify which sections, but you could figure it out if you are really curious. This subject has been discussed before and the current situation is that allowing bumping is mostly beneficial to the site. But we limit it to a maximum of once a day.

That's good if that's the case. Does that go for the bumping in invite giveaways as well?

I have unlimited Demonoid invites, and this thread is 2 years old. bump...

Thank you for asking this question. I was a little confused over the posting thing. I post a lot on some threads but my post never increased (which I don't mind). I was wondering why though lol. Thanks again

This x 23423942 - very well said Allice! Post counts are ridiculous and horrible ways to judge a persons "status" on a forum. Their reputation is much more reliable :)

I can honestly say I have NEVER looked at someone's post count and thought "man, that person must really be an awesome member, because of how much they post". In fact, I can't even think of the last time I looked at someone's post amount, be it when I was giving away an invite or not*. Usually if I am checking someone out to see if they are worth an invite, I, and most people, go by rep and igiver.

Also, I personally don't see why it would be a problem for bumps to increase post count. The truth is there are a hell of a lot more ways to inflate your post numbers than bumping the same post, over and over and over every single day.

    Anyhoo, just my $0.02

*not entirely true, when Ghost hit like 500 post I noticed that.
