    Default Rep Reminder

Perhaps there is no rule to say when to rep someone. But it does not mean we should not advise users.

I feel a reminder when to rep could be helpful. So users who are new would have an idea when to rep. I know I did not realize how important a rep is at first.

    In the help section:
I recommend a sticky thread in the help forum reminding users that a rep should be given in most cases to a helpful response to your help request.

    In the invite section:
    Invite Giveaway Guide
State a rep can be given along with an igiver after an invite has been received.

There's no rule to say when to rep someone because there's a rule not to ask for rep in way, shape, or form. This would completely contradict our policy even if we try to sugar-coat it with the word advise. I know there are new members who probably don't even know about the rep button, but they should have read the FAQs/Rules prior to and/or after joining the community. There's a list in the FAQs that suggests when it's a good idea to rep other members. As for stickying a thread in the help section reminding people when to rep, I don't think that will happen as it may inflate the whole rep situation which we've had encountered numerous times in the past.

The real problem is where the rep button is located and its visibility. Members would rather click on the Like link than the dull grey hexagram hidden on the left side of our posts. We are working to make it more visible so that should resolve some of the issues.

Actually, asking for rep will do the opposite - decrease it. From the standpoint of others that makes you needy and agressive. That basically deacreases your chances to become more reputable significantly. Also, that makes rep pointless. If everyone will follow the "you have to do that in order to" rule then we can aswell remove the rep button completely.

Existing members have proved that rep is achievable without asking for it. Some members in this situation have only 200 posts and they have rep beyond rep. Some other NEW memebrs prove that constantly. There are actually real reasons why they accumulate so much rep without asking for it. Some people are just more reputable than others and there are various resons behind that. In my opinion, this only improves the forum.

I know, it might look like an impossible task sometimes but it's not. Also, the more rep you have the more will come. I suggest you to start to think differently and do more by your standart to gain more rep.

This topic comes up from time to time as a search would show. el2em has already explained this well, so I would only add that rep shouldn't be given routinely or as the OP suggested ".. in most cases". You can like as many posts as you want to. That is why the like button is there. And it prevents spamming the forum with replies that don't say much more than "thanks".

Rep though is a measure of a members progress - feedback from the community of how much they've contributed. Our rules say that you can't ask for rep and to use it responsibly. And that should mean that you don't routinely rep. Rep someone when they do an extraordinary job or really help someone out. Or you are dying laughing over a particularly good post. It is largely left up to you as to when you rep. But as was already mentioned, we have rules about not asking for rep and not abusing your rep power.

El2em has said it all such a policy will contradict a policy already in place you are not to request rep on the forum st all so I do not see this going any where

    Exactly!

Dark gray on black and tiny, the button does not appear on one's visual radar unless somebody knows what to look for and does so actively. Once the colour is changed to green or something, the amount of reputation points given and received should normalize around what it is on other fora with an easily identifiable button for the expression of agreement or gratitude.
