I run Diskeeper 2010, and CCleaner. No protection, and no problems. Be smart people.

Win7 comes with all the basic security you need upon a fresh install which is windows firewall and windows defender. It also has automatic defragmentation built in via diskeeper(note to ssd owners DISABLE this).

There are better programs out there for your anti-virus and anti-malware needs than what windows provides which these tips mention a few of and others can be found in multiple post around here.

That said there is no better firewall than a hardware firewall. So if your in the market for a new router look for one which has a firewall.

I would recommend CCLEANER, Malwarebytes, Puran defrag, bufferzone ( pro version is free for a limted time )

sandboxes your internet running items) clear page file at shut down, Ditch IE and use FF or chrome... Antivirus... Panda cloud free edition is awesome i have cleaned many customers pc`s and friends pc with this antivirus.. very lightweight and uses in the cloud scanning,
Also in windows untick hide known file extensions

many many malware will use this trick .mp3.exe
unticking this option to show you the full file extension will keep you abit more safer..
Keep your windows upto date and stay away from the pron sites and you should be safe....

Plus any file you are not sure about upload to virustotal and have multiple virus companies scan it and you the results

Great post very useful :D, only comment I would say for anti-virus is nod32 very simplistic and low on resources.
