While this guide is available from several websites I have put this together from experience, the only two things that I have not done personally are: using the free, automated portforwarding program and using the dynamic dns free account as I didn't need either of them, they are simply added for those who do. Some of the dynamic dns info was pulled from here.
Turn uTorrent into your very own PRIVATE tracker!
So you have a file that you want to share with your friend but you either can’t or don’t want to upload it to a private tracker, this tutorial is just what you need. If you’re not currently using uTorrent get it here.
Let me start by saying that you must be connectable for this function of the client to work properly. There are many tutorials on how to do this and I’ve even seen software that will do it for you automatically, see if you're feeling lazy below.
· If you’re feeling adventurous try here (this will diagnose your connectivity as well as help you to get connectable if you’re not already)
· If you’re feeling lazy try here (it’s free but I haven’t personally used it so read before using)
Now that you have uTorrent open and your port is properly forwarded we can move on to the business at hand, sharing files with friends and family without uploading to a tracker.
Discovering your existing information:
· The first thing to do is to go here to find your external IP address, write it down for later reference.
· Next we need to find your listen port in uTorrent, no worries as this is very simple to do. Simply go to Options > Preferences > Connection > Port for incoming connections. Make note of this next to your IP address as we will need it shortly.
Making settings changes in uTorrent:
Please be careful as you should not change advanced settings unless you know what they do prior to making the change. You should also write down any changes so that you can undo them if necessary.
· In uTorrent go to Options > Preferences > Advanced go down and find bt.enable_tracker and set it to True by first clicking on the line and the ticking the radio button for true located at the bottom. You will need to restart the program for the change to take effect.
· Next you’ll need to create a new .torrent file. If you have not done this before there are plenty of tutorials out there and it is VERY easy. Now here is the real trick to making this work properly, when you fill in the tracker url it must be specific to your information that we collected above.
http://your_ip_address:your_listen_port/announce
here is an example: say my ip address is 123456 and my listen port is 444 then the tracker announce that I type into uTorrent during the file creation would be:
http://123456:444/announce
Note the semicolon, it's easy to forget!
· This next step is VERY important and EASY to forget so pay attention…make sure that you tick “Start Seeding” and “Private Torrent” the private torrent is optional but it doesn’t hurt.
· Now press “create and save” so that you can provide the .torrent file to others.
That’s it! Now you can send your private .torrent file to anyone you like and share your content with only friends or family. If you have any problems make sure that the numbers for IP address and port are in fact correct, check that the semicolon is in between the IP address and the port number. If you’re on DSL you may have issues with your IP changing every time you connect, this can be a real hassle. (Cable subscribers should not have this issue, while your cable IP may change it should not be very often) DSL customers can try these guys you can set up a free personal account and this will resolve your issue. Once your account is setup your url will be something like:
instead of
You see how the new account substitutes your account name from the free dynamic dns provider in place of the IP address. DSL is now good to go too!
