Never knew some of these things. I use VLC since it can handle all the file types but I will try some of these tips.

Are there any new things in the newer updates of VLC?
Has anyone tested the new 2.0 version of VLC?
So far I can't see much improvement. It's still ugly and I still don't see the many reasons to switch away from Media Player Classic - Home Cinema or SMPlayer.

I didn't know you could convert media with it does anybody know what the quality of conversion is like compared to handbreak. I think handbreak uses vlc on the backend to do conversions so maybe they would be the same. thanks for the tips! rep sent
For Youtube videos, you may want to directly extract the video/audio stream instead of converting it into another format, which may result in quality loss. You can use a program called FLV Extract to do this.
