Another awesome thing you can do with VLC is instantly start watching movies you are downloading with Firefox. All you have to do is open the .part file that Firefox creates with VLC and it will allow you to watch the movie while it downloads. I often watch xvid and divx files while they're downloading off of megaupload and the likes. It's basically the same thing that the streaming feature does but you get the file saved via Firefox and you don't have to worry about redirecting URLs.
