Hi!
This is my first time I'm writing a tutorial so don't hate =)
I'm writing this because the first time I tried to flash my xbxo360 I did it with jungleflasher since a lot of ppl are saying it's the easiest way to do it.
However, what a lot of people don't mention is that it's also the least stable og the currently popular methods of flashing your xbx360. I'm by no means saying it's not a valid, working way but a lot of chipsets will have problems with freezes during the process meaning that you will most probably get stuck midway.
What I want to achieve with this tutorial is to bring up the problem with Jungle Flasher freezes and tell you that it's not only the VIA chipsets that are having problem; after sitting in the Jungleflasher IRC with one of their testers for an entire night I finally got my xbox360 flashed and I used an nForce 4 chipset which they told me would work flawlessly.... it didn't.
So I want you to learn to use the IPREP (which is a DOS flashing software) which in my opinion is a lot moe stable and actually a bit easier to use.
I will also go throgh some of the problems you can experience during the IPREP method and seing as I got them all ... just bad luck tbh.. I can explain how to deal with them.
To start off, whether you are an experienced flasher or just a newbie make sure to refer to the 360mods.net site which is great for your flashing needs and questions since everything has already been answered.
What you want to do is:
1: install iPrep (as of today the lastest version is 009).. google =)
2: get your firmware (1.6 is the latest atm). If you don't know where you can google it or download and use xbins.
3:download the updated definitions for IPrep (for the version of iPrep you downloaded, it should be 009 but I think the older versions work as well: google or 360mods.net
4:put ixDef.xml from the rar file you downloaded and put it in the "resources" folder of the install location iPrep (iPrep/resources)
5:download firmtool1.3.1.rar (google or xbins) and place the firmtool.exe in your tools folder iPrep/resources/tools (for this and the step above you may have to overwrite the files)
6: start up iprep in windows, chose your firmware, make sure you select it to make your usb drive bootable, you can chose between FAT and FAT32, doesn't really matter. Write down your sata number your sata number.
7: boot from your USB stick.
Now these steps shouldn't be a problem and if you get iPrep to run it's really easy.
for using iPrep I won't write a tutorial since for that part you can use this video tut for BenQ, and this tut for iPrep with Lite-on. Obviously if you have a Lite-on it's a bit more trickier since you will need to extract your key from it but that's rudimentary knowledge you'd probably know, as I said this is not a general flashing tutorial. However the link above will help you do all that for lite-on.
Now lets cover the freezing solution to your jungleflasher problems.
Make sure you know the SATA port your using
What you want to do is make the USB stick DOS bootable using any method you know of or the ones I have listed furhter below (including some trouble shooting). If you use iPrep to make the usb bootable you should have L-O-eras.exe included and if you don't or if you didn't pick the iPrep method you will need to download it and put it in the USB ROOT, along with the iprep software and dosflash.
You want to extract the contents of your DOS folder in the FIRMWARE rar you downloaded (covered above) into the ROOT folder of the USB stick.
Also copy yout hacked.bin to the same ROOT folder of the USB stick.
Now you will need to turn your dvd drive off. Hopefully you will be able to boot from the USB, if you'r not then see below on how to fix it.
when you get to the DOS promt type "L-O-eras.exe" followed by the SATA port you're using, which you should know from previous attempts. Don't press enter
L-O-eras.exe [sata port here]
Turn on the drive and press enter.
You should get some digits, write it again and press enter.
Turn of the connectivity kit you are using and back on again.
Type dosflash and it will list some devices, press no until you get to the device you want to flash, pick it, press W for write and your set.
Now I'll be going over some of the problems you may experience with Iprep. This is where I think my guide stands out =)
The problems will most probably include you not being able to boot the memory stick and the reasons for this vary.
1: I assume you know how to boot from a storage device (if you don't; while your computer is booting up, (i.e. the initial dos part when you power on your computer before you get to your OS) make sure to force it to boot from the storage device and not the hard drive. This is achieved by entering the boot or setup menu, often hitting something like F10 while booting (it will say on the bottom of the screen what you need to press to enter the menu). While in the menu go to boot options and rearrange them so that your computer boots from storage devices first and then from the hard drive.
2: Even if you tell your computer to boot from the storage device this can fail and this can have several reasons. The most common is that some chipsets have problem booting off of larger usb sticks, my computer had a problem with 4 gb :(, some ppl solve this by partitioning a part of your usb stick to say 512 mb. Also the problem can be how oyur formating your usb stick.
For me nothing worked but downloading a utility that made my USB stick DOS bootable (googled it, there are many options) and formating the usb drive with it. You will still want to have iPrep and your firmware in the usb stick, since the program you're using to make the usb stick dos bootable does nothing to make sure you have the files needed to flash your xbox360. For that you need to make sure iprep with the propper definitions are in there and that you have your downloaded firmware in the firmware folder. This is easy since you'll probably first try with iPrep and if that doesn't work, just copy the files that were on the USB stick, then save them somwhere, now format the usb stick with the software you picked, and finally copy over the files to the usb stick =)
Enjoy and good luck!
Oh and if there's a demand for a general flashing tutorial you can tell me and I'll make sure to find some time and write one since I know how confusing it all was when I was a new flasher =)
