Default Speed up Torrents(Utorrent) with screens!

Note: (For users with routers only)
This tutorial is only if you haven't already opened up your ports to these programs.

For those who don't know what "opening your ports" is think of your computer trying to access the internet or vice-versa throught a big "net" or throught multiple "pipes". By opening specific ports you combine all of the "net-holes" or "pipes" into one big hole/pipe, therefore reducing the chance of "clogging".

    General Foreword

This is the general idea of what is going on.
One - Find out what ports your program is using.
Two - Open up the settings page for your router.
Three - Get the router to use these ports specifically.

    Utorrent

Step One: Tesing if your port is open
Open up uTorrent and go to Options > Speed Guide
This will open up the speed guide page and near the bottom of the window will be your (1)"Current Port" for me uTorrent has set it automatically. But you can set to any port you prefer. (2)This is your current port.
Note: When selecting ports make sure you don't select a port that conflicts with another program .e.g the same port/2 programs. I recommend ports 40000-60000.
(3)Now press the "Test if port is forwarded properly".
If it says it is OK then you can leave it here, otherwise continue.

    Step Two: Opening your port
    Now to open your port
Open your internet browser and type in the URL bar (1)192.168.1.1

This will open up a login popup. Unless you have changed this then the user should be admin and the password should be admin.
Linksys and Netgear settings pages should be similar and so the steps should be the same.
For Linksys you have to select (3)Applications & Gaming(For netgear routers, it should be under Port Forwarding/Triggering) now you should be in the Port Range Forward page. From earlier we found out what port my uTorrent was using now we have to find our IP address to forward the external port to our internal port within inner network(if you don't know what this means don't worry it's not that important to know how it works, just how to do it).
To find your IP address go to Start > Run > cmd now in the command box type ipconfig this will display your IP
Now it's just a simple matter of writing the port into (4)Start/End (They are the same), Your IP usually looks something like: 192.168.1.xxxx (the x's are a combination of any numbers usually set automatically by your router and can be changed if necessary)The Address (In my case 101) As for Application/Name type whatever you like, it's just to remember what port is for what program. Then check (5)Enable, then (6)Save Settings.

It should now say settings successful, click continue, you are now done.

You should now experience a much faster download/upload speed with your torrent manager!

You can't ask for an iGiver by posting a tutorial. A thank/rep is enough.

I would probably call this "How to port forward with a linksys router" instead of "speed up your torrents. I see where you were going with it though and it is a VERY good tutorial. Well done with the highlighting and documenting. I'd rep you if I could :)

I would say that this "speeds" up torrents, all it is doing is ensuring the your client cannot connect to the swarm more effciently, I agree with what danistheman is saying :)
