I am not responsible for any damage that you inflict on your computer by using this guide. If you follow the directions carefully, it should work perfect.
Also, this will not work on most wireless cards, sorry! If you want to test it on yours, you can give it a try but I doubt that it will work.
This guide is made entirely by me. There are no sources. :P
This has always been something that worked well for me. I will always do whatever I can to save power around the house, whether it be to put my computer in standby, or to install a energy-efficient lightbulb. Well, here is how you can do your part. This guide is going to show you how to download/upload torrents, while your computer is in standby. Pretty neat, huh?
OK, first, let's close up all of our programs except our torrent program. I use uTorrent, so it has been tested with this guide. Now you should see the uTorrent main screen. Start the torrent you like, and you should see the torrent starting to be active. Now, here is where the fun comes in.
This guide assumes that you are using Microsoft Windows. I used XP for this tutorial.
Hit the start menu at the bottom of your screen. You should see My Computer. Right click it, and hit manage.
Hit Device Manager. You should now see a bunch of the devices that are connected to your computer.
Now, hit the plus sign on Network adapters. If you are like me, you might see more than one. Thats okay, just find the right one. Most network device cards are Broadcom, Intel, Linksys, and the list goes on.
Double click on the card that is your network adapter. You should now see a screen like this.
The next step is to go to the Power Management tab. Click the tab, and you should see this screen.
Finally, un-check the box that says Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. You should see this.
Hit OK, and then close Computer Management.
So, make sure all of your other applications are turned off to have better power, and put your computer into Stand-by mode. Stand by mode really reduces the amount of power your computer uses. When a computer is in use or is idle, it uses about 80 watts of power. But, when your computer is in standby, it uses under 3 watts off power. That should help your electric bill. So, if you're going on vacation for a week, but want to stay active in the torrent world, this is a good trick for you.
Notice on your router/switch that you will see the LEDs flickering instead of being turned off. That means that it is working! :)
I hope this helps you guys!
