Thread: mIRC: A Guide =D

For all of those who use mIRC or want to, I am going to be creating a thread for you. Although I will not show you how to setup IRC, I will show you the abilities you have with it.

For a guide on how to setup your mIRC go to:

First go General then Options:


Next click Perform.


Check Enable Perform on Connect:

In here you can tell IRC to do many things for you. This is how you would do it.

Code:

/nickserv identify password1234
/join #TorrentsOwn
/join #help

You can put almost any command in here. For more help, come into IRC and ask me, or find IRC's help section.

Lets start by going into Tools and then Options.



Next, Click on IRC. This is what mine looks like.



Prefix Self Mode: This mode shows ones status infront of their name such as "@".

Show Prefix Mode: Prefix Mode is where it shows the persons status infront of their name. If someone is an Operator of a channel, they will have @ in front of their name. This is useful because it gives the persons stature in the channel.

Whois on Query: A Whois will tell you many things about the person. And a query is when you are PM'd. It will give information such as: Idle Time, Time Logged On, Logged in IP, etc.

Auto-Join on Invite: This is something to be weary of. If someone invites you into a room, it will automatically join. Useful if not abused by someone else.

Rejoin when Kicked: Obvious. It rejoins the channel after being kicked. Saves time.

Keep Channels Open: After being banned, kicked, or any other thing, it will keep your channels open for you. This allows you to read what happened up until the point you left rather than it just going away.

Rejoin Channels On Connect: Obvious, rejoins the channel after being disconnected.

Show In Active: What this does is, if you are queried or any of the other options in here, it will show it in the window you are in. This allows you not to miss pm's and important messages.

Next, lets go to the Options window. This one is alot easier.



Show: This allows you to see the information listed in there.

Short Join and Parts: This gives more room but takes away the information. Try it.

User Address: Allowing this allows you to see users ip address (although not direct, it is safe)

Nicks: This allows you to see that someone has joined the channel, and who it is.

Flash:

This will create a sound and flash IRC's channel and (later) if set, will flash the mIRC icon in toolbar.

Other:



Skip MOTD: Just do it. You don't read it eitherway.

Hide Ping Pong: Yes, Ping Pong will annoy you.

Cancel Away On Activity: Obvious, up to you.

Next lets go to the messages window.



I strongly urge everyone to change this.

Timestamp events: Please change it to (HH:nn:ss). This will show you seconds. Not just minutes and hour.

Quit Message: This is the only other "important" thing. This will show a message when you quit (not when you timeout). Example: (Quit: I Love TI, Traders Suck)

Next: Go to Display and then to Options.


Once here, Click Tray.




Always Show mIRC icon in tray: Obvious.

On startup mnimize mIRC to tray: Starts it in taskbar rather than bringing maximizing the program.

Place mIRC in tray when minimized: I love this function, saves room. Whenever minimized, it will automatically go to taskbar.

Animate icon when there is activity: If you have any FLASH's set, then you might not want this.

Single Click on tray to open: Obvious.

I wasn't aware that you has a topic on mIRC. Sorry.

mabey either one of you could also add how to secure and lock down your IRC client from attacks and/or how to connect to IRC anonymously
