I'm comforted by the fact that Microsoft Security Essentials found this right away. Great tip, have some +rep!

it just contains a test string that is/should be marked as a virus.

I never thought to try that. Thanks for the tip. MSE detected it immediately and deleted it. I'm surprised.

I hate to open a can of worms, but it should be stressed that this only confirms your A/V realtime scanning is operating. A/V apps are basically useless unless you're just completely not a computer person. And, unfortunately, those types of users are the ones that don't update their definitions frequently enough or disable their A/V because the virus asks them to first... Even with a full complement of vulnerability scanning tools, A/V, anti-malware, firewalls, intrusion detection and so on, there is too high a percentage of as yet unknown threats. https://www.virustotal.com/statistics/ This is without considering the "legitimate" companies out there that purposely keep their exploits secret and sell them to governments or the highest bidder. http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2012/03/21/meet-the-hackers-who-sell-spies-the-tools-to-crack-your-pc-and-get-paid-six-figure-fees/ I'm not suggesting you all put on tin hats, but just don't count on your A/V to do anything for you... Even the supposed whitehat experts don't always know what is going on any networking security gurus out there?
