Default One system, two versions of uTorrent installed - How?

As subject line really. I use a version of uTorrent for 98% of the trackers I belong to and a version of Vuse for the one or two of them that don't support the (slightly older) version of uTorrent that I use for the others. I hate Vuse with a passion though. It's rubbish!

I'd like to - if possible - install a second version of uTorrent on my system. Any advice on this please - any massive do's or dont's? My current uTorrent client happily runs from an external hard drive but I imagine there are some settings files somewhere on my C drive also. I don't want to overwrite my existing versions' settings file under any circumstances - re-adding and re-checking my current downloads and seeds would be a time-consuming nightmare.

Also any suggestions as to what version of uTorrent I should go for as my second version? Or even a perhaps buggy version to avoid? I'm currently using 1.8.x which is old but it's stable and is accepted by 98% of the trackers I'm on.

I would like to recommend you the latest stable release (curently 2.2.1 build 25130) it works on all my trackers. Now i have an idea that if you have one uTorrent installed on your computer and one different version portable it would work. You should try it...

not a problem to run even same version of utorrent at once, the only thing that would be recommended - is to change skins at one of them to differ them in taskbar
links above aren't too helpful, here's the correct ones
How To Run Multiple Instances of uTorrent (v1.7.7 & v1.8) | THE source for BitTorrent & P2P Tips, Tricks and Info. | FileShareFreak
    Download uTorrent 3.0 Beta 25252 - FileHippo.com
i'd recommend last generation stable builds all of its kind - 1.8.5, 2.0.4 or the forementioned 2.2.1, it all depends on features, utp functionality, ipv6 (not sure when it appeared), tracker compatibility, resource hogging etc. also you should know where all your setting / .torrent stuff is located, in case of using an external disc, it would make sense to put all your tech date there so if the disc is unplugged, utorrent just won't start...
another good thing to do is to put all setiings in dropbox controlled folder so you'll have all your data backups in case of a rainy day and if some error will occur, you won't have to rehash stuff, just restore it from early state from anytime of the last month....
the only and most powerful tool to move settings, your torrent data location at once is bencode, you can google for instructions, it's relatively easy, just don't forget to make backup of your settings before you'll start.

Thanks for that... would it be possible to run both uTorrents at once do you think?

I wish Vuse wasn't so rubbish! I re-checked a torrent I downloaded from my seedbox and uTorrent said I needed to DL a further 4MB from the tracker... except the tracker doesn't support that version of uTorrent. It's a partial download (one disk from a set) so I re-checked it with Vuse intending on downloading the 4MB with that... but Vuse shows "100% complete" on the top line (clearly it rounds up!) because when I expand and look at the individual files' completed percentage there is one file slightly less than 100% - if I'd re-checked it with Vuse and not expanded I'd have thought everything was okay. What a piece of junk!

I really need to make the shift to a more upto date version of uTorrent generally I think. I checked on oldapps.com and the one I use dates back to January 2009! Backing up my current settings into a Dropbox folder first seems very wise - thanks for that.

Slightly unrelated - but let's say I install 2.2.1, like it and decide to download and seed from that version from now on. Would the trackers I use freak out if I was seeding previously downloaded things (like say from a month ago) using 1.8.x and be seeding/leeching new snatches from 2.2.1? Both from the same static IP address. - It's gonna look weird if nothing else!

Well I've got a seedbox so I'm already using two IP's and two IP's and four clients (rutorrent on the seedbox, Vuse, utorrent 1.8.x and utorrent 2.2.1) might be pushing things a little!

For the record... I downloaded the addition 4MB using Vuse and then re-checked it in my 1.8.x utorrent... still imcomplete! Vuse = utter fail!

Okay so a couple of those links up there scared me lol - the "how to make it portable" instructions just looked too simple and it was written in 2006. Also, the comments on the FileShareFreak article had some scary comments from people where things had all gone wrong.

Anyway I found a ready-made portable here: µTorrent Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drivesµTorrent Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives I've backed up resume.dat and settings.dat so I think I'm good to go. Am going for version 2.2.1.25203 - I might as well go for the latest stable release! Fingers crossed!

New portable version 2.2.1 won't launch with the previous 1.8.x portable version still running.

Well I think I have followed the combined instructions. I did ignore How To Run Multiple Instances of uTorrent (v1.7.7 & v1.8) | THE source for BitTorrent & P2P Tips, Tricks and Info. | FileShareFreak though because it is from August 2008 and the user generated comments were not reassuring!

Both versions of uTorrent are in different folders on the external drive and both with launch and shut down remembering their own saved settings and queue etc. But they both won't run at once. That doesn't particularly matter at this point because I only want to re-check and download 4MB of data. I'm not going to continue seeding the torrent from my home connection now that I've transferred it down from my seedbox.

I will try adding the "recover" trick to the older vs. newer version of utorrent to see if that makes a difference...

Just when I was going to say thank you for your info you say I wasn't paying attention - well was paying attention, I just chose not to follow the August 2008 article (that finished with "In an upcoming article we’ll delve into µTorrent mods & hacks for private trackers" <- that's bad advice! How to get banned from your tracker kind of advice!) to the letter. I didn't do a "home-made" portable with the settings.dat blank file as per the FSF article, I went and got a ready made one instead from Portable Apps. The /recover thing I did do - but for whatever reason both will run only when it's the 1.8.x version that has the /recover tweak applied. The newer versions must be onto it or something. And for the record both file names were different utorrent.exe and utorrentportable.exe

there are many ways to get banned from tracker, blind giveaways is one of them too btw.
/recover works ok on both pairs of 2.0.4 & 2.2 for me, same filenames, for one copy settings are located in default appdata, for the second one - in correstonding folder. changing program name can't do nothing as it won't change the order in which utorrent will look for its settings
