You want rep? Win the (required) attention of the community... A Different Guide

Reputation is good. I know. It helps you move from a level to another. Both in real life and TI ;) You want some rep and you are finding it hard to gain some. I remember the days when I was thinking, what can I do?

Well, there is a really good thread that VectorKing had posted. You should check it out. It is great and really well written. How to earn your rep and be an asset to the community.

What I have to suggest here, is a bit different, having to do with how you can win the attention needed for someone to rep you, but not difficult though. Who knows, maybe you will even make friends…

Understand that you are a part of a community. Many think that this is just an invite providing site. They just come, get one-two invites and they are gone. Alright. But what would a community value? What could a new member do, so that others would appreciate him/her?

First of all, and I know that for some it may be late, but you should make a good introduction. Not saying too little, not saying too many. I have gained rep points in the past from my introduction and it wasn’t something that special. I still do.

Ok, so you didn’t know about this back then. What can you do now?
Let us know who you are by posting and talking about yourself or adding things to your profile page. What do you like? There is a general discussion section and even though most posts don’t count there, it is a great place to “present” you.

Also, what are your talents/abilities? There is a help section … maybe you are good with computers or coding… You have faced some tracker issues in the past and now you know the solutions that some seek. Or maybe you have been using Photoshop since you were a teen, but you can’t find someone to show your talent. We have a Graphic Design section. Offer your services. We need good avatars and sigs and we “pay” well for them ;) Don't forget to make a good avatar for you as well.

Thread names are also important: Hmm… You made a tutorial and spent all that time on it, but 2 weeks passed and you have only 10 views. Change the title to something interesting. Let us know about it*. Most members, even though they check the new posts, do not click on them…
So, you know a possible date that a tracker that -many seek for- will open its gates? Do NOT name the thread “The 10th of April is the possible date for HDChina…”, instead name it: “HDChina opens its gates?” … a question is always catchy, it will bring in even those who don’t care about that tracker, but they love to answer questions and converse. [also these people usual have good rep power ;)]

    *Visit the
IRC and be active. Don’t just stand there observing. Participate. You can just laugh at some joke. Others need to know you are there. Some people give rep to members for just being there.

Do not be a smart a.. …People don’t like those who know that they are clever and abuse it (to make others feel inferiors maybe?). It may gain you some rep points in the beginning, but that kind of attitude will “take them away” eventually. If you are smart, help the community using your brains. Make useful and productive posts, suggestions, help catching traders and liars or just spend some time in the Brain Stew.

You just saw a mistake? Do not post beneath it showing your superiority. Yes, we know that you want to help. So you can pm that member and show him/her his/her mistake politely. Do not report that post if it is not that serious. Mods do have a lot of work, they don’t need more. Show your good side and rep points will come.

Check the people that have gained many rep points
Member List - Torrent Invites - Get your free bittorrent tracker invitations! . Check their profiles. What did they do? What was so special about them? The answer is to start being active. All of them, each one at his/her sector, spent time for the community. These people also value and appreciate active members and these people have huge rep power. Let them know you exist. [Try not to fall into the “spam trap”. This is not good.] Post to their threads or a mod’s thread. I am sure that you will find some of them interesting, so it won’t be difficult for you to find something to say.

Give rep to others. There isn’t a better way to show your appreciation here. You saw a useful post? Rep the member who posted it now. Remember: “You may be lucky enough to receive the same Reputation back in turn” ;) Check Trevor's post How to earn your rep and be an asset to the community.. It is great.

We are all humans and we do like others to appreciate us and show us some <3. So, I will give my max rep power to everyone that posts here suggesting something new, it doesn’t have to do with rep only, you can suggest ways to be social and make friends as well (that will certainly bring rep). If it is interesting enough, I will add it here, posting your name next to it, so that others may rep you as well if they want. (I will add anything that will cross my mind on the way too).

    Above all, Smile...

Very good posting with good points made. Many thanks indeed. I think rep is a good way of making people stop and think about what they are contributing to the site so its a system that works for me. And it makes it more interesting/challenging.

I will have a think about new points to make but so far, your post is too complete lol.

mmmm what I've done is just not care about rep lol. For some reason people just like to rep me. I mean no disrespect of course but why make a guide about rep? It's not something you should earn by following a tutorial nor would I want to give to someone who just forcing themselves to be active in the community. No need for it IMO. Again I mean no disrespect

But surely a thread likes this makes a community member think..., rather than just walking away? Maybe one of the points will spark off a thought, and someone will think, 'Yep, I can do that' who wouldn't have thought of the site from the point of view of the poster. Yes, its great if everyone comes in wanting to 'give back' but human beings being what they are, it doesn't always work that way.

If someone wants to just ask for invites and walk away, they won't even read the post., but there will probably be a few wondering how to get rep and if that leads to contributions I'm not going to bother if they are totally altruistic contributions or not. Its the way the world works, if there's a reward for doing something (rather than a general 'feel good factor') more will do it than if there is no reward.

Again, no disrespect meant at all. I like the site the way it is.., makes it more interesting than it was to begin with. I joined because every time I wanted to find something out.., and googled.., a post or two from this forum came up lol. The site isn't just about invites (they were secondary for me) its also about the tutorials. And every single member knows something someone else doesn't. Why not encourage them to write it down? I've just taken an hour to write a tutorial.., I did it because I wanted to.., and would have done it regardless but the prospect of getting the odd rep from someone also helps (positive reinforcement etc).

Great post, F1member! Thanks for your time and energy to post some really great tips! You just earned some rep yourself :D
I can still remember the days when I was just starting and how mysterious the whole rep thing was to me. It was great to see all those nice comments in my control panel when I was new and it encouraged me to be even more active and more helpful. And I still like all the rep comments I get! :D Some of them are even entire love letters haha really love those xD
I think I got my first rep points from posting some giveaways. I remember I was also having fun in some game threads and was very active in the riddle thread - so I guess people just repped my giveaways because of all the other things I was posting around the forum which caught their attention. And then I started working in the intro section, which raised my rep considerably - so there you go, another tip: go help in the intro section :)
If you really don't know where to start: good giveaways will certainly give you some rep. I sometimes just browse the invite section and give rep to good (by that I mean GA's that don't violate any TI rules) giveaways, even if it's "just" a Demonoid giveaway - that shouldn't matter. And I know other members do this as well.

    Love your guide sir!!!

I am still relatively new here and the best way I have seen to be noticed and make friends is just trying to be helpful and posting around in the different sections. Don't limit yourself to one area and only post there. It's hard for people to get a feel for you, spread out and post all over.

(off topic Baskey love your Avatar and Signature combo. Nina Dobrev is one mega hottie, glad to see someone else appreciates her beauty.)

Reputation is important, it speaks to one's character in real life. And marks a member's progress here. Thank you F1member for a well written and thoughtful guide. I'm glad that I took a gander and it will be invaluable to many members here.

For members just starting out, it may seem like it will take forever to acquire any reputation points. But that isn't true. Receiving rep is a bit chaotic, because not everyone does it. And you shouldn't expect a lot of rep the first month or two that you are here - people are just starting to know you. But there is no doubt that if you write helpful posts or are at least active and visible that rep will come. Slowly at first, then more and more if you are active. You should know though that our rules do not permit asking for rep.

If you are still uncertain, go read F1member's post again. It is full of great advice. And remember that everyone here started with zero rep. We have a great community and you will get at least as much out of it as you put in. Probably more.
