Default [Script] Easy ruTorrent installer + Web server, FTP, Webmin (Linux)

    Hi guys,

    This thread is about

Brock's Easy ruTorrent Installer + Web server, FTP, Webmin Script

    which can be found here:

Easy ruTorrent installer + Web server, FTP, Webmin (Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora/More)

    This script is awesome.

This script is the one script, to rule them all.

It will save you at least 3h of work when installing rTorrent, the ruTorrent webUI, a web server, a FTP server and all kinds of stuff you need on a root server that you want to use as a seedbox.

It just does everything for you. Lean back and watch your server becoming a seedbox in 10 minutes of time, without you doing anything.

    It's perfect.

And it just works out of the box!

I tested it multiple times on both of my seedboxes, under CentOS and Ubuntu Server 11.04.

Full credit for this goes ofc to Brock @ forums.rutorrent.org. This guy is a true hero. I love him.

Btw, he's helping people having problems as well, so if you should have any problem with the script (which I doubt), his thread is the place to ask.

    Happy seeding!

I successfully used this script but a couple of issues came up.

Assuming you're using ubuntu, you'll need to create a new user and add him to the sudo list. Then you'll need to log in as him when you start the install.

Additionally you'll need to copy the generated code (after several minutes of crunching) and place sudo in front of it.

I'm new to all this, but I had all sorts of issues when installing as root.

Who suggested running it as root? Never do that. Never log in to your server as root. Just don't.

Of cause you need to run it as a user with root permissions, therefore he needs to be on the sudoer's list - this is pretty obvious, at least I thought so... but I can write a tutorial on how to do all that if people are interested in it.

I never had to copy any generated code anywhere when running this script btw.

This was my first time installing from scratch, and no, I'm not experienced in Linux. It was not obvious to me that you needed to run as a not root user. No one suggested that you should, but that is what you start with when you get with the raw distribution through OVH. I wasn't attacking your tutorial or anything, just trying to help out the next linux noob.

Copying the text was necessary to place sudo in front of the auto generated code. The installation would fail partially through if this wasn't done.

Yup, tutorial and script was really easy.

Have you restarted your box? I need to modify the start up scripts or something as I have to manually start webmin through the terminal command /etc/webmin/start.

webmin seems to boot up ok but i had been trying to get that other script working for kimsufi 2G [Tutorial] Kimsufi 2G / Seedbox - VPN so that could be why webmin starts on boot.

Thx! This script saved me hours of work. After the third time executing it it worked.
I needed to make a non superuser.
And I forgot to make the non superuser with useradd -m
I forgot -m so no home directory was creaded.
The third time everything worked out.

Another tip. If rutorrent does not show the right amount of free disk space then do the following.
    cd /var/rutorrent/rutorrent/conf$
    sudo nano config.php
    CTRL-W to search for $topDirectory
Make sure $topDirectory points to your home directory so the line should say something like this.
    $topDirectory = '/home/username/';

Then save and restart your webserver.
Now rutorrent will show the entire disk amount.
