Default rtorrent Seedbox Issue - Any help gratefully received

I have a seedbox with fastsh.it (350VPS - 350HDD and 1350Mb). I have repeatedly tried to setup rtorrent 0.8.5 to no avail. rtorrent 0.8.2 seems to be installed ok, I can run it via terminal, but the 'watch' folder isn't automatically responding to torrent files that I place in it.

I also have rutorrent 2.7 installed which seems to be ok, but the two aren't working together either.

As you may guess from this post, I am a total linux n00b, and even after following several self help and install guides, I just can't seem to get it over the line.

    Somebody...help me...please???

Ok i will help u, but i need all the info u can give me. First are u sure u have the watch folder setup correctly in your rtorrent.rc file? Second what errors are u getting in the log tab of rutorrent? To have rutorent able to talk to rtorrent u need to compile rtorrent with xmlrpc-c, did u do that? Then u need to add a line in rtorrent.rc file for it to work. Give me more details about all the errors u are getting and how u installed everything. Also if u can, please post your rtorrent.rc file so i can look at it. I promise i can have everything fixed for u in no time or if u want i can walk u through setting up rtorrent-0.8.5 with rutorrent.

Without root it will be nearly impossible to fix anything. U need to get a hold of your provider and basically wait for them to fix it. The error u are getting is about rutorrent having trouble talking or connecting to rtorrent. U can try and install the plugin RPC to fix your problem, but like i said u need root access. Contact your provider and ask for help.

    Hi Mike

Firstly, thanks for the offer of help.

In answer to your questions, I cannot seem to access the rtorrent.rc file. I get (gedit:21503): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: everytime I try to edit it.

Yes I compiled rtorrent with xmlrpc-c, but I'm not sure if that completed either???

I'd love to post my rtorrent.rc file, but as mentioned, I can't seem to access it.

I think I need someone to actually log into the box and attempt to fix it for me, maybe too much to ask.

SSH in using PuTTY. In your home directory you should be able to issue the command

    nano .rtorrent.rc
    or
    vi .rtorrent.rc

to show you the contents of your file.

gedit is a graphical text editor, are you attempting to issue this command through a VNC session? or an SSH session?
*: cannot open display usually means that you have no X session running for gedit to make use of, or you are trying the command as a user that is different to the user the X session is running as.

    Thanks Q

If I nano I get a blank screen (new file) so I presume rtorrent.rc doesn't exist???
