Default Where are Seedboxes Actually Helpful?

Hey Guys. I just installed Transmission on my Kimsufi dedicated server and i'm trying to figure out what to do with it. I plan to use it to download torrent files sometimes, but I have a lot of extra bandwidth and also thought it would be fun to help out with seeding. I like the community, etc. of private trackers, and thought maybe I could seed some file there, but i'm worried that I'll just make it harder for others who are torrenting on a home computer to keep their ratio up. So, what do you guys think is the best way to use a seedbox to help out other torrenters?

To be honest I never bought the argument that seedboxes are detrimental to private trackers. The reason why private trackers like SCC are renowned for blazing fast download speeds is that seedbox users are grabbing every torrent with autodl-irssi or rss. While they may be using a seedbox for self serving reasons they are contributing their bandwidth to the community which is why they are incentivised to do it. An important reason why a site like What.cd has such a large library of torrents and very long retention on them is because of the competitive seeding environment which encourages people to upload their own music. I think that on balance people would prefer to find the music they are looking for than for it to be easy to keep ratio.

Anyway aside from helping to seed under seeded torrents with your seedbox the most obvious way to contribute is by uploading torrents. In the past I have found it pretty easy to fulfill requests on private trackers by using rapidleech to grab the content from ddl sites which is sometimes the only place where obscure stuff exists.

Thanks. That helps a lot. So as far as uploading torrents goes - is it usually just a process of downloading them from one location and uploading them to another? Do they need repackaging, etc.? Sorry - I still haven't figured out how to insert returns on the forums yet so i'm typing in one single block

In general people like you to leave scene releases and those of p2p groups untouched, the main rule which many trackers have is that they want content to be unrared but this varies from tracker to tracker. It is possible to unrar files on your seedbox and I'm pretty sure that there are tutorials on this site to do that. Obviously you would want to check the uploading rules for peice of mind, hope that helps

So do (or should) most releases only have one torrent associated with them?

On some trackers, they allow compressed and uncompressed torrents to exist together. But, like Kamo said, you want to check on the rules of that tracker. Most trackers want Scene releases untouched, but everything else is fair game. I haven't done too much uploading, but AnimeByt.es and hey.fux0r are two sites which allow compressed and uncompressed torrents to co-exist. If you're looking to rise in their user classes, repackaging torrents is a great way.

Thanks guys. So, I mostly download/share windows applications/games and high def. moves (and occasionally music or a HD TV series occasionally). Should I try to become part of several specialized trackers or one big, general one?

Its totally up to you, if I were you I would start off with an account on IP torrents which is the one of the biggest general private trackers and has a lot of HD content and games. Then if you found yourself wanting more you could join specific trackers in your areas of interest eg. Bitgamer for games and HD torrents for HD stuff.

First thing you should do is create and intro and get 10%. After that, you'll be able to apply for many of the trackers that are given away on this site.

For Windows applications, I've had a good experience with Demonoid. It is ratio free and hosts pretty much any app you can think of. I think there's only been a couple of apps that I could not find hosted there.

For HD TV shows, Bit-HDTV has a bot that uploads a lot episodes as they are released. You might want to check that tracker out.

For music, the most popular trackers are Waffles.fm and What.cd. Both trackers are very hard to build ratio on. You'll probably spend a considerable amount of time trying to build up your buffer before you go on a download spree and get what you really want. Both they both host an abundance of music content and have really tight quality control.

For games, definitely check out bitGAMER and Blackcats Games. Both trackers are pretty much identical and host games for pretty much all platforms. Both trackers are easy to maintain ratio. There are a lot of upload credit giveaways in the "Bonuses" section of this site if you ever need help with bitGAMER. Blackcats Games is pretty much ratio free. You just have to seed your torrent for a few days.

    Thanks for the responses.

    Just got 10% :).

@dysrhythmic A good APP torrent like that would be great. It can be so hard to find APPs that work - esp. for less popular software types like system tools, etc.
