Default Strange/Crazy Idea: Create torrent from Seedbox instead of using FTP?

    Hi everyone!

I'm kind of a new user, and I just recently started using a seedbox, anyway, using FTP has been kind of a pain in the butt because download speeds fluctuate much and sometimes with larger files the download just hangs there, and besides I don't really like to leave my PC on all the time, so I had this idea, I use a small network hard drive that is always on to torrent stuff from home and I figured:

¿What if I create a torrent in my seedbox only I have access to and announce to a public tracker or some tracker that is fine with that, and then download that .torrent in my home hard drive?

Is it possible? Has anyone tried it? What trackers would you recommend to upload it to?

    -Thanks!

Your network hard drive has a torrent client to download torrents without your PC? Just checking that is what you are saying...

Well it's possible, but seems like more hassle than it's worth. I'd figure out your FTP problems..

FileZilla you can download multiple files at once. CuteFTP you can segment downloads so (let's say) a 500MB file is split into 5 (or whatever number you set) simultaneous downloads to maximize the speed. Either of these methods will usually max out your download speed and get around any slow speed problems. Usually. If your seedbox is really that bad that these don't help, get a new seedbox. Both clients will let you shut down your PC after the download is finished, if you're concerned about that.

But for your idea, sure it would work. But any public tracker will most likely have a web interface of all the torrents on it, and there's no guarantee that someone else won't download your torrent just for the hell of it. Also check your seedbox, some disallow public trackers or limit the upload speed, so you won't get any benefit doing it that way.

Check out openbittorrent.com it may suit your needs for a public tracker.

The answer to any security issues is simply run your own small tracker on the box.

Yes my hard drive has a built in transmission client, I was also thinking of maybe installing an ftp client to my hard drive.

Right now I'm giving ftp a second chance, hahahah, using cuteftp. I also tried filezilla which had good speeds but I hear cute is more robust because of multipart download.

I think I'm going to put my crazy idea on hold for now, since I don't want to create a bunch of public torrents just because it's easier to do, I'll try to get my client to shut down the PC after downloading... Or maybe use my old netbook as a ftp client....

    Thanks!

More hassle than it is worth, ftp is better. With regards to multipart download, I have not seen much benefit, but I only have a 8Mbs connection, so perhaps you benefit more if you have a fatter pipe. Other than that filezilla is a better client.

I didn't like multipart either, maybe the speeds were better but the transfers kept stalling, I'm using FileZilla now and I like it better, I don't have great speeds either, just 6mb :(...

But yeah I think my idea was more hassle than it is worth, Thanks!

I did some limited testing of filezilla vs cuteftp when I first saw the segmented downloads. To be honest I don't think it really makes a difference, it just "looks" faster. The segmented downloads are essentially the same exact thing as filezilla's multiple file downloads, the only difference is that in Cuteftp you're getting 5 streams of the same file and in filezilla you're getting 5 files. The time it takes to download a single file using each method was pretty much a tie.

But you can easily max out your d/l speed by using filezilla and having 5-6-7-8-9-10 transfers at the same time.

I am interested in this because my box has an issue with FTP being slow (I think because of disk usage) while the connection is still fast. I can be uploading at 30MB/s and stop the upload, and still only get 150KB/s of my 3MB/s dl speed.

Must I have a tracker to download from my seedbox via a created torrent? I can't seem to make it download currently, so this would make sense.

Are you in the U.S. and using Verizon? I know that some seedbox companies have reported slowness with using FTP. For example, I was getting 1 MB/s download speed using Filezilla. Now, my plan through my ISP is 15 MB/s, and only the FTP was slow. I moved to CuteFTP and set up the segmented downloads, and it hits 10-12 MB/s using that. Since I was skeptical like those above that it might just create the illusion of a faster download, I even download the same file, using Filezilla and CuteFTP (segmented), to test it, and the speed was there.

You can read about it here:

Try that and see how it works.

No, my ISP is Road Runner, and I have no issues with high speed to other servers via FTP. Occasionally I can achieve max speed, but it's usually in the odd hours of the night. I tried multithreaded before, but if anything it seemed to slow my connection.
