Default Use a seedbox for a private gaming group

Hi glad to know there is good community of people to talk with about file sharing technology, I am part of a gaming community called 42nd Air Assault Regiment, We host Arma 2 game missions on a regular basis. Part of hosting these games requires us to make available what we call a deploy packs (file), it contains custom modules that are created by us to be used in upcoming missions. So we have been making use of our web site host to host these files but we are running into load issues with our web host as the files are large, 2gigs or more and with a bunch of people downloading them at the same time ever Friday night it becomes a problem with frequent disconnects and file corruption. So I thought that a good solution for us that would give us high bandwidth for downloads at a low cost would be the use of a seedbox. I purchased one from ovhseebox.com for 15$. Im not really to great in understanding bit torrent technology, I mean Im pretty savvy when it comes to technology, but bittorent tech is kind of complicated to me when it comes to setting up.

What I want to do is to host this files privately between only our regiment. So Im having trouble understanding how to setup a private torrent for this file I uploaded. Do I need my own private tracker? or is there a way to setup a DHT torrent so only the people I give the torrent out to can download it? Also I want to use the utorrent client to download the torrents but the server, when I setup the torrent only seems to support torado and mainline. Do I need to have one of those clients to create a dht torrent file and is that the best way to make a private torrent? Do I have to use a tracker? I dont want to use a open tracker so that people outside of our regiment can download the file.
The server uses torrentflux to handle the torrents
    Any help would be appreciated.

The easiest thing to do is run an FTP server and give everyone access to pre-defined folders, why waste time with torrents for this?

we have been using a ftp directory with our webhost. the problem is our files are over 2 gigs and with 20 people trying to download it it becomes a problem with our host's bandwith., it seems like bitttorrent would be better for this because everyone is helping distribute the files.

Webhosts don't appreciate being used as file hosters (which is their fault for not specifying since most offer unlimited everything, but then get mad about it), why don't you get a VPS that's 100mbit unmetered, then you'll have no issues. (run FTP on that)

Otherwise, the easiest thing to do is create the torrent file in your client, put your IP as the announce, and then share that with your friends.

Get 100mbit or 1GBit VPS and run FTP on that with limited Privileges, it will work

    Thanks

Not sure why you guys are getting bent out of shape for him wanting to use bittorrent. Its the ideal solution. Think, if you have just 10 people (guessing you have more in ur clan) trying to download 1 file at the same time, all 10 have 10mbps connections, they will be maxing a 100mbps server. Where as if they are using BT, they will also be helping to seed, meaning you could likely server 12 people at max speed.

So to answer your question. Yes doing it from a seedbox will be better, bear in mind though, if your on a shared server, you might not get the full speed, due to other users. Maybe a gbit connection will suit you best.
Make a torrent with your client and use a public tracker. openbittorrent would do. Aslong as you only share the .torrent file with friends no one else will be able to get the files. Also if your a bit security mad about it, make sure once everyone has got them, they all delete it from utorrent or whatever client you are using.

Would also make it as a private torrent, do dht and stuff is turned off, although if you forget todo that, it shouldnt really matter.

That definitely wasn't my intention or how I wanted to express my point, Bittorrent is a great protocol, but I feel that a FTP site on a VPS would be a much easier, safer, and reliable solution.

I did offer him a Bittorrent based work-around that avoids using trackers. I may be a bit out of date, but the method I described above should work.

If he uploads his files to torrentflux, and in torrentflux creates a new torrent for that file or "pack", he can specify the announce url as the IP of his seedbox, then he can distribute that torrent to his friends and essentially, they have created their own mini tracker.

No relying on public trackers, uploading to them, or anything.

My attitude per say was more at webhosts that offer unlimited everything, but then constantly complain when people actually start putting any kind of load on the account.
