Default Seedbox dedicated server sharing question | Need Help

Ok so here's my situation, a fellow member from a private tracker wants to share his dedicated server / seedbox with me. Dedicated server, huge hdd. 100mbs.

Now everything sounds cool, but you know the old saying when something sounds too good to be true..... Now I am still really new to servers / seedboxes etc, so I don't know the potential risks or anything like that. He said he will allocate part of a hdd to me, set up my login etc, I won't be able to touch or change any of his stuff. Am I just being paraonoid here? or is there risks involved? What would he have access to me and vice versa? He's not going to be able to go through ftp and hack my computer now is he? lol

Still a noob, trying to learn. People who have or used dedicated servers before, what are some of your thoughts? Any inputs would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Any admin ALWAYS has access to ALL files on a server; how else would he be able to set you up with an account, HDD and such?

And I don't understand the paranoia about "hacking your PC"; unless you are running Windows ME still, having a shared seedbox only entails you opening a few http-streams and ftp-streams to connect to it. Something you do almost daily so unless you are 100% sure your OS is vulnerable and you have 20 "free virus scans" on your PC, everybody is able to hack.

Basically, you're asking if ANY admin (being a friend, semi-friend of company) will dig tru the files you download/seed on a seedbox and hack your PC. If you think we haven't got anything better to do that harass the average consumer, then a seedbox is not made for you :)

Because he has root access and you don't, he will be able to view all your files but not vice versa. He won't be able to access your home computer, you shouldn't be scared about that, but he could possible extract your passkeys and download from your trackers at the cost of your ratio. But that's the risk you always take when you don't have a dedicated server and only rent a seedbox.

Thanks so much for the replies. I figured as much, I just needed more people's assurance. Are those the only things though?

    Basically, yes...

Depending on the functionality you get on a shared seedbox, there are more vulnerabilities towards your account in the end. I don't know the guy you want to rent from thus cannot assess his technical knowledge.

If you feel scared, please visit the Seedbox Advertising on this site and try a seedbox with one of the more trusted/known providers. Might cost a bit more maybe but at least you can "rely" on the reputation of established people./edit:

/edit: I know this is not the place but if you have a seedbox and want to try out another private tracker, PM me for a trial-account on my tracker.

Leave your paranoia behind, or leave internet
Nothing is secure in life either, doesn't mean we have to stop taking precautions to protect ourselves in real life or on the internet.

Anyway, bentemer, you do have a valid concern, although it is not as great a risk as you may have thought, getting a seedbox slot does give the provider possible access to your tracker passkeys. It's a risk everyone has to take when getting a seedbox. However if you know the person well then you shouldn't have much to worry about. But it would be safer to get a seedbox from a proper provider, they have greater vested interest, therefore are much less likely to take advantage of you.
That being said, people do share seedboxes all the time, so its not like its common that peoples account are taken over etc. So its up to you whether you wanna take the risk.

LOL...u make a valid point...but drauka's point was not that you stop driving (using your example)...but to take precautions like getting a valid driving licence, wearing your seatbelt, having the necessary insurance, etc

There's unavoidable risks and there's unnecessary risks

Thats what he's trying to do...get necessary information so he understands the risks properly and not dive into something without a thought lol

Thanks for the responses. I am not scared, I just never used a dedicated server before or understand how it works so I have no idea the risks involved. Never hurts to learn what you don't know right? Really appreciate all your responses. thanks.
