Thread: Web/FTP access to seedbox

I'm new to this so forgive me if it's a silly question, but if i have a seedbox where i download and seed torrents, can I give my friends Web or FTP access to the downloaded files on the seedbox?
or isit only 1person allowed access to the seedbox via FTP or Web.

It depends on your provider.

For the semidedicated xirvik boxes for example, you're only allowed 1 FTP user and you are not allowed to share that account with others. This is per their TOS, so whether you follow it I guess is up to you. If you do decide to share that information, the people you share it with will have everything they need to take control of your box.

I have tried checking this on some of the websites but they don't usually seem to explain this, and if they do they probably say it in a way (seedbox user lingo) i'm not familiar with since i'm a noob.

What about web access? do most seedbox provide this? can they really tell how many people using that kind of access?

I'm only asking as whenever I download say a movie or TV show, I have to put it on usb and give it to couple of friends who dnt usually download or use torrents. This way i can jus set them up 2get it in a easier and quicker manner.

BTW, just been looking in the seedbox giveaway section and wondering how they manage it as then they would be more than 1 person accessing it?

A seedbox is a dedicated server that has been configured for torrenting use, and includes the necessary programs such as rtorrent(utorrent clone), web-gui for Rtorrent (Rutorrent), and a FTP account. Those companies that offer seedboxes are generally renting out a dedicated server from another provider, installing the necessary software, and subdividing the dedicated server resources into however many users they are installing, per box.

You can however rent the dedicated server yourself from a company like OVH (this is what I do) and install all the necessary software yourself. Then you can add as many users as you want and install the software that you want.

For the seedbox GA's, the owner is either providing one of the limited use accounts they created, or are handing over the seedbox they have rented from a place like xirvik to another user for a limited time. What I was referring to when I said they could take over your box is that your friends would be able to delete your torrents and otherwise mess with your settings. Also, the login information and password is the same for the FTP account as the main server interface, and I believe you can change the server's password from that page. You could also get a reset from Xirvik, but I'm just throwing that out there.

I understand what u r saying, but they split the boxes so people can have their own utorrent downloads and bandwith.

What I intend to do is just have me using the utorrent to download torrents as my friends don't know anything about torrents.
I will then give them access either FTP/HTTP so they can download to their computers anything I have on the seedbox.
The security (issue of them deleting or messing with settings) is not a problem s I only intend to give access to 2 of my friends to share my content.

I thwt HTTP access would only allow them to download what I have and not allow messing with stuff?

And lastly, how do people share seedboxes then?
If I get a seedbox can I split it further (if provider allows more than 1 user)?
Or if I share a seedbox it would mean both people share 1 utorrent and download at same time different torrents?

If you have a dedicated server or VPS you can do whatever you want and it's certainly possible to create multiple users that have FTP access to one certain folder, but not more. This way they can download the files from your server, but not more.

People usually share seedboxes that they either create mutiple VPS' on one server or one of them has root access and creates multiple users for the bittorrent client that can also use FTP.

It depends on the provider, but most providers will not allow you to split it with other people unless you give them your FTP details.
