    Default better settings for rutorrent/vps

    Hi,

Could I have your help on the proposed settings for rutorrent to work as closely as possible

For example here is the vps that we have our rutorrent

    Intel Xeon E3-1240 - 3 x 3.30 GHz
    4 GB RAM
    2250 gb Disk Space

Very often we get in the torrent the message "Storage error: [file chunk write error: Cannot allocate memory.]"

Simply there is some guide with suggested settings on this, if you can to us you suggested something

    Thanks in advance

Someone just had the same problem a few days ago. I provided you the link:
Storage error: [File chunk write error: Cannot allocate memory.] error

What this means is that you have too many torrents active (having 2+ huge torrents downlaoading with a couple of others active, for example) and your HDD can't keep up with the speed and it therefore tries to temporarely write into the memory, when it's full you get this error.
The reason for this is most likely a misconfigured .rtorrent.rc file and you should change the following setting to this:
    max_memory_usage = 6000M
That should be fitting for your amount of memory.
If your max_memory_usage is already set nearly this high than you can only change your torrenting habits.
This problem only occurs with the much bigger and cheaper HDD drives.

Please consider making an introduction, because repped in members will be helped much more quickly and they will be more thoughtful answers. ( Intro

I don't really understand what you meant, but it's usually located at your homedirectory and it's hidden so you type:
    cd /home/your_username_here
    ls -a
Then you should be able to see it and modify it with your prefered text editor, but that's all descripted in the thread I posted you a link to.
It's exactly the same problem as you have.

Do not change it to 6000MB, you'd kill the server

He's only got 4GB ram.. So he'd over allocate the ram. Leave some extra for the OS n such.

Make the max memory usage like 2800MB

Where are you getting this VPS from? Whats the network speed? If its anything over 200mbps, I'd strongly suggest switching to deluge.

You are wrong about that, because it uses the kernel mapped memory, which is significantly more than the physical memory.
    * Max memory usage for mapped chunks is now controlled by ulimit or the "max_memory_usage" option. This only controls mapped memory, not resident.

Source: [Libtorrent-devel] libTorrent 0.10.1 and rTorrent 0.6.1 released

A lot of seedbox vendors make this kind of mistake and set their max_memory_usage settings even underneath actual physical memory.
If you reducee the sizes of receive and send buffer you should also see an improvement.

The last step is to work on your torrenting skills and not trash the HDD.

Don't forget that the syntax was changed after the unstable 0.8.7 release of rtorrent so you need to find/add/edit pieces.memory.max.set

As far as I know, almost all syntax was changed for the rc-file and even some options/switches added/removed.

I have to disagree with this. It is a common misconception even among vendors that max_memory_usage refers to physical memory. And accordingly set this parameter somewhere between half to three quarters of available RAM. This invariably leads to chunk allocation errors and a sharp drop in download speeds. Max memory actually refers to kernel mapped memory. This is an addressing space, not allocated or physical memory. Accordingly it can and should be set much higher so that memory space used to mapping file chunks is not exhausted under heavy use. I commonly set this to 3500M for 2G systems.

A lot of the confusion exists because rtorrent/libtorrent documentation is sparse and people make all variety of assumptions. Lots of people have claimed i.e. told me that this refers to physical memory, but none could offer any evidence. It's clear to me that it is an addressing space, but for an authoritative answer you just need to look at the post that Magister already quoted; this is Jari Sundell, the programmer who added the max_memory_option to the binary, stating that this is mapped memory.
