    Default Seedbox Port Range

    Hi,

    Forgive me if this a question with an obvious answer that I think I know, but I just want clarification. I have just started with a seedbox (whatbox.ca). One of my private trackers has a nifty place where I can set up a seedbox on my account and it asks for my seedbox IP and Seedbox Port Range. I can get my IP from the info page at whatbox, but is the port range the Listening port range that I can see in ruTorrent?

    Thanks,

    Denarama

    You should see the port in your rutorrent settings menu, on the connection tab. The port number there should be the start of the port range. So if it says 54440 there, the port range is likely 54440 - 54448, although it would be best to check in rtorrent.rc or confirm with your vendor as a larger port range could have been defined. Note that "randomize port each start" if checked, it refers to a random start witihin the specified port range.

    The information here is a reflection of how the port range has been defined in the rtorrent configuration file i.e. .rtorrent.rc. Probably you don't have shell access with whatbox, but if you do, then you can check /home/.rtorrent.rc or use get_port_range on the command line. Also, any changes that you make in rutorrent will only remain for that session. If rtorrent restarts or your seedbox is rebooted, they will revert back to the original settings. Changes are not persistent unless rtorrent.rc is edited.

    If you are changing the port range, you should not use the default bittorrent values e.g. 6881-6999 or 6890-6999. These are a target for hackers and will be blocked by many, if not most trackers. I'm sure that your vendor won't be using these ranges anyway.

    Thank you! I was able to look in .rtorrent.rc and confirmed the port numbers are 61000-61100. The randomize port is checked in ruTorrent - that's not going to be a problem, is it?

    I don't think that the random port setting will cause you any problems. Random refers to a random start position within the specified port range. So if your tracker accepts the 61000-61100 range, you should be covered.

    The relevant settings in rtorrent.rc are usually:

    # general settings
    # listening port
    port_range = a-b
    # Try to open a listening port in the range a up to and including b
    port_random = yes | no
