    Default The secrets of seeding?

I've got a couple of seedboxes, including a dedicated 1gbps box and a shared one. I never really see either of them seeding much more than around 10mbps, most of the time 1-3mb/s per torrent. Whats the secret to seeding? Should I not be seeing bigger speeds than that? What kind of torrents should I be going for? Am I in competition with other seeders?

You probably have too many active torrents at the same time thus saturating your connection and overloading the HDD. You also need some automation tools like autodl-irssi for grabbing torrents fast and rtcontrol for managing torrents efficiently.

Well, first of all you need to test your connection. I see that you are a member in SCC so this is the best place to see how far your connection can go. As for your shared box, i assume it's the NL-S250 since you mentioned it in a previous post of yours. In that case, i can tell you from my personal experience that NL-S250 is capable of hitting up to 80-90 MB/s upload speed which is pretty amazing considering the price you pay. Getting speeds around 35-45 MB/s is pretty common as well.

So, to begin with, install autodl-irssi. Then stop all your torrents and let autodl grab some torrents automatically from SCC. Set the size to be around 700 MB-15 GB because anything above that will make your disk go nuts and after a couple of minutes you will get speeds like 3-4 MB/s. You will have to monitor the downloads so you can actually see the speeds. Each time that a new download starts, stop the previous active torrents.

Thanks - 80-90 MB/s on SCC? I always find SCC downloads fast but takes ages to upload again. Clearly, I have been doing something wrong. My NL-S250 is actually 'in for repair'. After they ran tests they agree something is wrong with it. Still, even my Xirvik box never reaches anywhere near those speeds. So, I need to quickly learn how autodl-irssi works - is there a starter guide somewhere?

Yes, i've seen speeds of up to 90 MB/s and since i don't like exaggerating, here is a small proof:

Of course, the speeds drop a little fast but it's ok considering that the HDD is shared with 3 more ppl and it can't keep up with high speeds.

You can find the instructions here:

    SourceForge.net • View topic - Installing autodl-irssi

After you download the script and run it, it will guide you through the steps. You don't have to do anything special. My advice though is to completely reformat your server and do a fresh install. The script will install rtorrent+rutorrent as well.

P.S: The difference between autodl and adding torrents manually is extremely huge in trackers like SCC. Sometimes, torrents take like 2 minutes to appear in the website from the moment they are announced. Those few seconds are crucial for your speed. Assuming that i had 50 MB/s UL for the first 2 minutes (actually it was more like 60 but took the screenshot kinda early) i uploaded 6 GB. If you were to add the same torrent manually, you would be automatically 6 GB behind me. That's a kinda generic example but i think you get my point. ;)

Nice speeds! I have autodl-irssi installed on my Xirvik dedicated box so I'll test it there first - looks a little like RSS feeds. My NL-S250 is still being sorted as far as I know :-(
