For majority of private trackers, seedbox isn't necessary. However, there are other trackers (especially music) where seedbox is a must in order to maintain a good ratio. The price of seedbox has gone down within couple of months. So, you could try out a entry level seedbox for under $10 and see if you like it or not.

i recently just got my first seedbox it does help out alot not just with ratio with your bandwidth as well in my case my isp only lets me up and down 100gb which is nothing in a month i prefer paying for seedbox getting better speeds then paying more to upgrade my isp with not that great results. But thats my opinion also if your like me new to SB's i would recommand you check out superseedbox great customer service and good speeds hope this helps some people out

i used to just manage on my home connection to keep a ratio near 1, considering my upload was capped at 20kb/s to keep the net usable for everyone, this was no easy feat.

since i am now never home and have to use an expensive wireless internet plan where uploads are counted, its impossible to get a ratio, so the box is worth it. so far i am avgin 1TB a week upload
    Only need 1 more tracker - F*N

Rent an OVH EG-BestOf10R Gigabit Seedbox. It's all mine. I don't like sharing even with 100 MB/s

So if you can afford it (i pay 15$/month) it's nice to get SB for 1 month, get nice buffer and then dont care about downloading too much anymore. The only problem is that once you have it, you dont want to give it up :D

I think its hard work, but can be done without a seed box. I cant really say what difference it makes because I have never owned one, though I get by from my dsl home connection so far.

Obviously it depends on the tracker. On sites like ScT and SCC it's best to have one, but they're definitely not necessary. (For those sites a person could download packs to pad their ratio.) I went years without a seedbox and my ratio was/is over 1+ on every site I'm on.
It's more of a matter of having the intuition to chose "good" torrents... meaning those that will allow you to gain a good upload buffer.

Having a seedbox is awesome though. They're worth it if your home connection isn't really good or if you want to be able to download lots of stuff without worry.

They may not be necessary now but wait and see someday they will. With a seedbox you realy do not need to know much about anything as far as torrents go and you can blast away even the very best seeders that have a home connection. The reason is simple super high speeds that most home connections do not have. With a home connection even with a good ul speed you still need to be very aware of what your dl to seed back you really do not with a seedbox because they are so fast you can do in 10 mins the same amount of ul that it will take a person without one hours.
The seedboxes are already a necessary part of the torrent community without them we all be waiting a lot longer for our torrents.

in most places it's probably optional but on highlevel trackers such as scc, bitmetv, waffles (especially scc&bitmetv) you'll HAVE to have a seedbox, otherwise there's no way you can keep your ratio

If it wasn't for seedboxes then people wouldn't have trouble keeping good ratios without needing one. I always had 1.5+ ratios in all my trackers and then quit downloading for almost a year (because of WoW). Started again about a month ago and I hardly manage to get 0.10 up. Since I got my seedbox yesterday I am doing 3+. But I realize that this is killing normal users like me with avg uploads of 512 kbps since each time a new torrent is out 4-5 seedboxes rush to take out the uploading leaving only a minimum margin for the rest of the people to upload something. One day seedboxes will kill the torrent sites (when everyone will have one). But so far I enjoy the thrill of trying to be the first to get the dl:p
