    Default Seedbox necessary?

    Hi T-I,
I am kinda new in the private tracker bussiness, got my first invite (for DMN) this morning.

But, in the future, I want to become member of HD-torrents, but now my question is: will I need to purchase a seedbox to keep my account there?

    Thanks already!

Needing a seedbox depends mostly on your home connection. If you have a slow upload connection a seedbox may be necessary for the hard to seed trackers. THat being said, I'm not a member of HD-Torrents so I can't definitively say you'll need a seedbox for that particular site.

Edit: I've just checked the review here and it seems to have free leech torrents. So, unless you're upload is very bad you should be able to survive there as long as you build a buffer with the freeleech torrents. If anyone is a member there please correct me if I'm wrong or if i overlooked something.

Also, Killstreak, what's your upload speed?

I just started using a seedbox recently, and it helps tremendously with seeding. Also, if you're in the US, you won't have to worry as much about copyright infringement letters from your ISP, not to mention shakedowns like the Hurt Locker thing.

There are 3 types of trackers:

    1) Ratioless trackers
    2) Trackers with FreeLeech content
    3) Trackers without FreeLeech content

In the first 2 categories, you can definitely survive without a seedbox even in the top notch trackers. Since you are not experienced with how things work, you will have to be a little bit careful in what and how much you download until you get a bit more familiar with the whole concept. Freeleech torrents are awesome for new users and if you use them right, you will never have any sort of troubles.

The third category is a bit more tricky. If you get into a high level tracker with no freeleech content, you will most likely have to buy a seedbox to help you maintain a decent ratio. In such trackers, there are a lot of users with 100 Mbit up to 10 Gbit boxes which will rape your uploading. By the time you will upload a few MBs, you will see a swarm full of seeders and little to no leechers which is bad for your ratio. I'm not saying that you won't manage to survive without a box but it will definitely reduce the risk of getting booted due to low ratio.

In any case, a seedbox offers a lot of benefits and you don't really need to pay much money if you are a casual user. It will help you to find invites much easier because members will trust you more seeing that you have a seedbox. It offers an extra layer of security and since all the leeching/seeding is being done on it, you won't have to abuse your home PC in order to maintain a good ratio.

To make a long story short, no a seedbox is not necessary but it helps quite a lot. If you are worried about not being able to keep up with tracker's demands, you should buy a cheap box for a start and see how it will go. Better safe than sorry.

Yeah, I have to agree with Freeman, seedboxes aren't necessary except for a few trackers, but having one can make a big difference, especially with the number of invites you can get, coz having a seedbox will make it easier to get great stats on many trackers quickly. You also don't have to spend too much on one, many providers offer basic cheap seedboxes and you can try using one of those initially, if that's the route you choose to take. There are many reviews/advertisements you can go through in the seedbox sub forum if you decide to get one. I also have a few seedbox details listed in my thread (check my sig) that you can go through, don't rely solely on that though, its still WIP.

I don't think it's necessary to have a seedbox, but I think it makes the torrent life a lot more enjoyable. With a good seedbox you don't have to think about ratio (this is not entirely true, but reduces it), you don't have to keep your computer running all the time - your seedbox will seed 24/7 (unless the serer is down, obviously) and the most important factor to consider, in my opinion, is that you can max out our home connection if you actually download the files to your computer. The security aspect was also mentioned: On private tracker is the risk of getting busted a lot less, but I think the extra step if using a seedbox will be well spent.

Ok, thanks everyone, I am still considering one.

I came into the torrent world to get things free where I otherwise had to pay for. If I have to buy I seedbox I think that purpose is gone you see?

Hey, just to be clear, a seedbox is only necessary for the hardest to seed trackers, for most trackers you should be fine without one, so you shouldn't feel like you are obligated to get one.

Ok, but at my home speed, I am only getting a ratio of 0.20 :s

But can you give an example of what hard-to-get-in trackers offer what the other trackers do not?

0.2?? How long are you seeding for? And what is your upload speed?

I did not mean hard to get trackers, i meant hard to seed. There are trackers where pretty much everybody has a seedbox and many of them jump on torrents immediately they're announced so you are always competing with high speed seedboxes and with a slow connection it is very hard to get a decent ratio. I didn't mean to imply that these are hard to get trackers, not all of them are, although, they usually go hand in hand on this site because people who have invites for those sites typically have much higher requirements when giving out invites.
Btw, if you aren't a member of IPT i'd suggest you look for an invite, thet have great content, and pre-times and tons of free leech torrents to buffer your account, you'll never need a seedbox to survive there.
