Default Question regarding Seedbox at home.

So i just received an offer to upgrade my internet connection to 1000/1000Mbit/s, and im thinking of upgrading my seedbox, since atm I max the torrents @ a speed of ~8.5mb/s, but when i use the "Disk Cache" function in uTorrent, I top @ ~11,5mb/s (I currently have 100/100Mbit/s).

So my question is, what kind of hardware do you need to be able to use the full speed of my new internet connection?
    Atm im using:
CPU: Intel Q6600 Quad Core 2.4GHz
    Ram: 6gb ddr2 800MHz
    HDD: WD 1TB 5400 rpm
    Network Card: some random 1Gbit/s
And with this setup i can only download ~8.5mb/s without dedicating RAM. Atm I only use this machine for torrents. The seedbox I'm thinking of building should be able to manage download and upload speeds of up to 100mb/s.

Your bottleneck at those speeds will almost always be disk. Faster spindle speed, more cache on disk, etc. Get it.

On another note, I drool at your internet connection.

You should get a SSD and your problem should be fixed ;) You probably have a Caviar green HDD (i see that you posted that is 5400rpm) and this disks are known to be pretty slow...

BTW: amazing home connection Just out of curiosity, how much do you pay for it? I know that in my country some have the possibility to buy fiber optics with 1Gbit/1Gbit connection too (sadly the fiber optics is not possible for me) and it costs 1000€ :( ...but the 100/100Mbit connection costs about 50€ :D

    Thanks for help =D

as nate123 said, utorrent performs poorly on high speeds. i prefer rtorrent though :P
and i also recommend getting a ssd or some raid setup of multiple disks to have the read/write speed to max that 1gbit connection

    Yeah, HDD is the issue.

Upgrade to 4x1Tb drives in RAID0, pref WD Black, even then you won't be maxing out your link. For example oding an 6x2Tb or hell even 10x2Tb RAID0 would go far.
Tho, 750Gb Cudas are good and you can pick them cheap, they have good price to performance to size ratio, but can be hard to find. Don't use 500Gb Cudas, they suck compared to 750Gb, or WD Blues. Even WD Blacks at 500Gb are quite cheap and high performance!

Then install our PMSS as per instructed in our wiki, setup an user using 5500Mb RAM, and full HDD amount. Edit lighttpd conf to put in the user vhost name as the server name, so you can access it just typing your homeserver name in URL address bar (in some cases, you might need to edit workstation hosts file, i can instruct with that).

Now, let's assume you put in 6x750Gb Cudas.

You should be seeing roughly 350-400Mbps average upstream 24/7 with those settings, maybe even 500Mbps. and on top of that, everything is automated, and if you setup dyndns instead of just local name you can connect to it from anywhere to add/remote torrents, download/upload date etc etc. or even share with your friends :)
CAVEAT: I doubt your ISP actually can support these kind of constant BW usages, so you might get complaints from your ISP, or lower performance etc. so use with care :)

Where do you live, and how much does that connection cost you? That's really awesome home connection :)

PS. You can downgrade to a mere Core2Duo or even Celeron without performance drawback. Also i suggest using higher end NIC rather than integrated, ie. Intel's NIC for ~50-60$

Superb Seedboxes starting from 5.06€ a month for TI members!

I was thinking of changing to Ubuntu Server and rTorrent. insted of my current windows 7 (my current "seedbox" is my old computer, I've only been using it for a month). And I'll probably Raid0 a few TB disks.
