Yes cuteFTP is cool but remember the difference in speed you have discovered will mainly be because you are using regular FTP insead of SFTP.

BTW SFTP should work fine if you setup a new connection instead of using the quick connect.

I just use normal FTP because of the speed difference...

Ohhhhh! I didn't realise that. FTP noob alert lol. Tbh honest CuteFTP works for what I wanted - line-maxed FTP speeds BUT the nested queue thing is annoying. It's providing an average speed rather than a current speed with the inclusion of finished threads. There are no options about how to change the speed either. Was 'current speed' to much to ask for?!

When my current transfer finishes (30GB folder, one hour to go) I'm going to try 'normal' FTP speeds with FileZilla. I wish Cute's interface was nicer because speed-wise it's great!

Ah cool yes, once you test the speed please post the results here if you remember because I would be interested to know which is faster..

Just be aware that the speed is measured in megabits not megabytes in cuteFTP so this will need to be converted to get a comparison.

I looked at my router's data monitor tool and CuteFTP is faster no question. It maxes out my line to the point of not being able to browse unless you throttle it a little. I think it's the multi-threaded thing. One thing to note is that when I loaded the torrent and re-checked the download data on my desktop machine I had to re-download 4MB. That was a Cute transfer. I didn't have that with the FZ downloads. Am going to try FlashGet for tonight's FTP'ing. I know that has a threaded mode like Cute but I'm more familiar with it's interface (I think!) as I used it as I regularly used it as my download manager a few years back.

Just to update... I used (independent measure lol!) Net Limiter to monitor bandwidth usage and FileZilla is the slowest, CuteFTP is second place (because there were peaks and troughs in the rate) and Flashget was consistently fastest. So I'll stick with that. CuteFTP was similar in speed but because it tended to drop off then pick up so Flashget came out on top.

my favorite SFTP client is FileZilla. While it doesnt support multiple threads per file download/upload, its otherwise very stable and just as fast as other clients... i never heard of filezilla performing bad (see cinemas post). It always maxes my home connection with a single thread and never broke a download for me, unlike cuteftp, which i dropped because of it...

edit: ooops, missed the other posts by cinema :3

I'm was using FileZilla with SFTP... It was working great at the begining, after many months the speed falls to the half with no reason... and that was worst with cuteftp... so now i'm using plain FTP instead :(

I'll try many alternatives you mentionned above guys :)

Just to update on this really... am happily settled with an older build of FlashGet (v1.73 build 128). I couldn't find the Site Explorer tool/function on the newer versions (anyone?) The scheduler function means I can set it to move data overnight and max out my bandwidth to non-browsing levels lol. Also, this is what I was really looking for, each queue item shows time remaining time and current speed with the overall transfer speed shown at the bottom. All downloads have re-checked fine with uTorrent after download.
