You have SFTP access, but not SSH access. Maybe some time in the near future, but it's a risk for abuse right now.

I'd also like to point out to future seedbox users...You can only upload as fast as people download and visa versa. We keep throwing popular torrents on and getting absurd speeds while a few have claimed it's the server. So just because it's a fast server, doesn't mean you'll upload 12.5 Mb/s to a person on dial up in China. That is my rant for the day after fixing everything.

Just a clarification, Is there any ssh access with the account.. to run irssi in the account itself ? since ftp to a home connection(slow connection) and then uploading via ftp generally results in broken torrents.

    Synth/Danni

If your using rutorrent, there is an irrsi plugin now, not tried it myself, as I allow SSH, but if your not allowing it, it might be a good plugin to include :)

Also with the speed thing. I can not stress this enough, I have users saying the same thing to me.
"why is the speed so slow" On checking there account, 9/10 times its because of bad torrent selection.
If you want to build a decent ratio, you need to be using good trackers (TL, SCC, IPT, GFT, PTM) are normally great trackers for it.
If the speeds are slow, look at the peers tab on the torrent. Is everyone stuck at the same % as you. I.e is there 1 seeder and 30 leechers all at 30%. This will result in slow speeds due to the seeder cant supply enough to keep the torrent moving quickly.
Also watch out on old torrents for "FAKE" leechers, this is where users only download part of the torrent, they still show as a leech on the tracker as they have not completed the torrent.

Well thats my little rant aswell, but I hope it helps explain a few things

What precautions do you take to ensure no one abuses SSH? Unless you're very good, I'm pretty sure if you gave me SSH, I'd be able to mess your box up something fierce. :P

Further, what do you feel merits the need for it? Or is it just to appease users because they like having it? I have little idea what good SSH does for someone who has SFTP/FTPS access anyhow. Things like rar, zip, and even irsii as you pointed out can all be dealt with via plugins.

Ya there is a plugin but I think you have to configure it via a config file before the user can use it. ie) server, port, etc. Which makes it more of a hassle. Not entirely sure, because I've only had to install it once at SeedMonster. I remember that the user had to invite themselves into an announce channel when the server joined at roughly the same time. Coordination was hard.

I could always chroot their directory, but damage is still possible. Little OcarinaKid tried to exploit all my stuff 8|

I dont personally feel this is the place to discuss how I run/manage things, this is a thread for warp speed.
All I was trying to do, is point out there is another way to allow the users an IRC downloading option. As synth states though (which I have not tested) is the plugin is not straight forward.
I really should try it out, but never seen the need.

Personally the best thing that i find with SSH is the Web Proxy use with SSH tunneling. It's way better than CGI Web Proxy.

Then I don't think you should be using you own managerial techniques to contrast ours.

"Oh, really, you allow SSH? Well maybe I'll PM you..." yada yada yada. I see what you were trying to do here. But we're not going into any of your threads trying to contrast our company, are we?

I personally don't think SSH is a necessity, or even particularly useful for this sort of thing, and it's a security vulnerability. I was simply expressing that. If you're going to recommend something, you should be willing to back it up. Further, you should have already used it or tested it (as with the irc plugin). I'm not trying to be cross, so, apologies if I come off that way, but, if you don't want to hold a discussion over something, you should not start one.

That is a good point, but, I've never seen a site break out of CGI Proxy. Perl is pretty powerful. I personally think a proxy is a bad idea. Hiding your IP under the same IP other people will be using, potentially for the same things... eh.

Anyhow, like Synth said, if we could make sure SSH was super secure, we'd enable it in the future, but security is a huge priority.

We're on RapidSpeeds in the Netherlands. No, you can't change the passwords manually, as they have to be changed in around 8 places, but, you can fill out a support ticket to have us do it for you whenever. =]

Well, I was one of the Lucky ones to get a trial account, and I have to say that I was impressed.

The Biggest suprise was the awesome control-panel GUI. very fast and simple.

I was given only 5gb, but managed to fill it up and maxed out my 12.5MB/s up and down limits effortlessly.

The peering is fantastic (NL) and actually I went over the limit to 12.6 occaisonaly. It just wanted to keep going!

Heres some screens from my test slot:

I had a great experience and they were very friendly.

I wish them the best of luck, and Would recommend them to anyone! :D
