Default Guide to My Computer Shortcuts

Hallo TI, I receantly stumbled onto these smart shortcuts you can add to your My Computer through an edit of registry.

For you who are not comfortable with editing in the regestry or those who is unfamiliar with it; you can stop reading now.

This is an edit to the registry and things can go wrong if you don't know what you are doing - proceed at own risk.

Even though if you wish to proceed please make a backup of your regestry - A guide can be found here:
    Backup Your Registry

All credits for this guide goes to PCwizkid Telktalk - Please check out his videoes, if you liked this guide.

Final result will look like this:

    Step one:

Click on start and type in regedit in the search field.

Say yes to the pop up window asking if you want to allow this program to make changes.

    Step two:

Navigate by clicking through folders and subfolders to this exact path:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\

    Step three:

At this path you will find two folders named "find" and "Manage" here we're gonna create the shortcuts.

To create these shortcuts right click on the shell folder and go to new key.

This creates a new subfolder, which you should name what you want the shortcut to be named.

For instance I'm making a shortcut to launch the clean manager, so I will call it " - Clean me up!"

When I then right click on My Computer it will an option that says " - Clean me up!"

Now right click on that subfolder you just made and go to new and key. Name this one command all in lower case.

When you click on the subfolder command on your right you should see a file called Default - Double click on this file and a pop up window will show.

Here you need to put in the name of the windows exe file that you wanna launch with the shortcut.

In my case I'm making a shortcut to Windows update, so I will type in cleanmgr.exe.

    This is the final result:

This works with Windows exe files as they are already located within Windows.

You can also make shortcuts to other exe files by moving them to the Windows folder and then adding the shortcut just like in the guide or you can add the whole path to the value (Under the file Default in the last step)

I'm not familliar with any other way to add shortcuts to exe files outside the Windows folder.
You can probably just add the entire path of the executable or you might be able to add the folder name to your PATH environmental variable.

In addition links in linux are much more powerful ("man ln") Soft links are super powerful in Linux and there really isn't a Windows equivalent.

    But cool tutorial! Thanks!
