    Default KMFDM news thread

Never one to shy away from asking the tough questions, KMFDM gives voice to the inquiry that is on everyone's lips in these twisted times - WTF?!.

WTF?! features 11 brand new songs, including the band's latest anthem and album's lead single "Krank", the dreamy yet driving "Dystopia" and the super-charged revolution-themed rocker "Rebels In Kontrol", which has already made news as a protest song in support of Wikileaks.

The WTF?! artwork features a humorously suggestive, yet ultimately destructive cover illustration by KMFDM contributor Brute!, a fitting visual for this sly but brutal release.

With WTF?! KMFDM once again has given notice to the mainstream that "Whatever you stand for, we do not!", be prepared as, "It's a fuckin' takeover!"

WTF?! will be released on April 26th, 2011. Look for pre-orders in the KMFDM Store soon.

The tracklisting for WTF?! is below -

    Krank
    Come On - Go Off
    Rebels In Kontrol
    Lynchmob
    Take It Like A Man
    Viva La Mort!
    Dystopia
    Panzerfaust
    Spectre
    Amnesia
    Death & Burial Of C. R.

"Achtung! Here we come . . . with another dirty bomb!" Get ready to Krank it to 11 as KMFDM proudly announces their first new single in over 9 years - Krank.

Krank contains 2 new songs, the band's latest anthems "Krank" and "Day Of Light", and features multiple versions of each one, for a total of 5 tracks, providing almost 25 minutes of music. None of the versions of the songs found on this single will be on the band's forthcoming 2011 full-length album; the Krank single is the only place they can be heard.

The cover artwork for Krank is by stalwart KMFDM artist Brute!, depicting a caricature-style panoramic portrait of the band.

This new single is proof that "Once again rings true, what we always knew, KMFDM is the drug for you!"

Krank is a joint release between KMFDM Records and Metropolis Records and will be released on March 8th, 2011. Look for pre-orders in the KMFDM Store early in the new year.

The tracklisting and remixers for Krank is below -

Krank (Käptn' K Mix) by Sascha K.
Krank (Komor Kommando Mix) by Sebastian Komor
    Krank (Knark Mix) by SKOLD
Day Of Light (Revenge Mix) by Bill Rieflin
    Day Of Light (24/7 Mix)

    INTERVIEW WITH SKOLD

    nterview with Skold
    By Raphael Shlosman

SKOLD IS BACK!!! Do I really need to say much more than that? That's right ladies and gents, the Swedish born musical phantom has returned with a vengeance. Acclaimed for his work with Shotgun Messiah, Marilyn Manson, and KMFDM; Tim rolls into 2011 with his first solo album in 15 years. Fans across the world have been itching and scratching to get a fix of new material, and the wait is over come April and May of 2011 (April the single "Suck" hits and in May the full length album).

It would seem the appropriate time to have a chat with the man behind some of Industrial's most influential material. So sit back you maniacs and enjoy as we delve into the new album, touring, and much more; I give to you in his own words Tim Skold:

Rafi: 2002 seems like light years away, but 2011 marks your return with brand new Skold material. With your hectic schedule through the years, what made this the right time to put this album together?

Skold: Well, I started to realized I was becoming a music recording hoarder. Over the last few years I have accumulated a ridiculous amount of songs in varying stages of completion and something had to be done about it. That and a completely irrational sensation that it may all very well end in 2012.

Rafi: After so many years of working with others, how does it feel to return to creating music for yourself? How much does this material reflect what you have gone through the last few years?

Skold: After the Marilyn Manson expiration I decided to
take some time to just record music for the pure hell of it. No record company, no band, no deadlines, none of any of that. No ulterior motives and politics, no strategies and no justification, only music. Absolute creative control.

Rafi: I have only had the pleasure of listening to the upcoming single “Suck”, I still have not stopped listening to the track, what direction did you end up taking with the rest of the album? Are there any special contributors to the album’s creation?

Skold: I wouldn't say that the song 'Suck' is particularly indicative of the sound of the album at all, that's just not the way I work. The album is practically a random collection of songs I have recorded over the last few years. I'd have a really hard time trying to justify choosing what song to put on this album because I had to do it on a whim. I have so much material and it is impossible for me to say that one song is better than the other. Everyday I love or hate a new track.

Rafi: When looking at this album versus others, have you noticed yourself the changes in yourself as an artist since the first Skold release in 96’? If so, what changes have you noticed?

Skold: That is a bit of a catch-22 because a you get better and more comfortable it also gets harder to try new stuff and/but the desire to experiment is the very same thing that holds you back from actually completing a recording. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. No change there.

Rafi: The music technology has changed in a very vast and rapid rate over the years. As I am sure you are more than familiar with the new technology with other projects, did you embrace using them for the album or return to older styles of creating and recording?

Skold: I find myself swinging back and forth with that stuff. Wrapping vst's to run in a big fat Pro Tools rig and the next minute randomly scrubbing bundles of tape across
detached playback heads. Old Ak47 pistons chime beautifully recorded at 96kHz and 'the latest soft synth' sound even better out of a broken old speaker. New Old School.

Rafi: Last interview we did was shortly after 2009’s best album, KMFDM Vs. Skold. I have heard rumors of a second installment for KMFDM Vs. Skold to come out in the
future. Are these true? When can we expect it?

Skold: I think expecting SVK II to happen anytime soon would be a mistake but you never know, you know?

Rafi: I have read that KMFDM will be returning to the US in 2011 for a tour, are there any possibilities that we will get to see a KMFDM and Skold tour? If not when can we
expect Skold to return to touring?

Skold: We're looking into the possibility of touring for SKOLD, I think the material will translate really well to the stage. I have some ideas on who I'd want to play with, but it's going to take some time to set it up and do it right.

Rafi: In the last couple of years I have noticed your remix work for artists such as industrial pioneers 16Volt and rising Industrial/Punk maniacs Left Spine Down. I am
curious how different is the mindset when remixing other artists’ material versus your own? How do you decide which artists you will remix?

Skold: Don't forget the Front Line Assembly remix I made. I'm really happy how that one turned out. Remixes are different mostly because, at least for me they're done on the spur with little to no time to second guess everything. I just go with the mood I happen to be in at the time. That decision comes down to time, money and if I like
    the band and track.

Rafi: Heard some more rumors that you might appear somewhere to DJ for the release of this new album. What kind of tunes can one expect to hear you DJ? How did you find yourself wanting to DJ and how do you enjoy it?

Skold: I've been toying with this idea for a long time. I have no experience with Dj'ing whatsoever, but I have been using computers to generate music for some time. A
major reason for me being excited about it is the technology. There is so much cool stuff that can be done on the fly and in real time now. Things that used to take
forever in the studio. I've been messing around with working that in to a set based on material I've been connected with on the recording level. I think it would
translate really well to dance clubs

Rafi: Off the topic of music in our last interview you hinted slightly to your dislike of illegal downloading. How do you perceive the changes downloading has caused in the music industry? Do you see a positive side to it?

Skold: No, it's hard for me to see a positive side to the fact that I've come across a mere fraction of exciting new bands in the last 10 years compared to the previous 10.
It seems like more and more people are starting to realize that they don't really want to listen to 'hobby-music' and that good shit is well worth paying for.

Rafi: Your music was used for video games when the gaming companies were just starting to reach out to artists for music in their games. How do you feel about this explosion of music based video games since like Guitar Hero/Rockband? Do you play them at all yourself?

Skold: Nope I do not. I haven't even tried. Even though I am intrigued with the tech of game creation I have no desire to play them. I'd be up for doing music for it if the right game came along. I have a bunch of material waiting for something like that.

Rafi: Back to our last interview, you had mentioned a concoction you had developed on tour with vodka + Jaeger + mentos; I am curious to try this mix (yes I am a glutton for punishment) what is the recipe and how do you put it together?

Skold: Haha, that's a real sophisticated cocktail isn't it. No one who isn't already drunk is going to try it and by then it's too late for a recipe, mix to taste! Reminds me of a Blueberry and Tequila mix I used to do. Same thing there, mix to taste!

Rafi: Touring is one of the hardest things to do for some artists, what are three things you have to take on the road with you for a tour; not having them makes for a bad tour?

Skold: My wife, my pets and my house would be nice. Realistically, a portable computing device set up for music creation and a decent internet connection, preferably broadband is a must. I'd say the most important thing for a good touring experience is all about friends, good people you like to be around. That's what really makes it or breaks it for me. Not my special neck pillow or American made toilet paper or Starbucks House Blend, hey wait a sec...

Rafi: Thanks again for taking the time to do this interview, is there anything you would like to let the fans know about things to come for you in the future?

Skold: Thank you. I think my fans appreciate the fact that they never really know what the hell I'll do next and I love 'em for that.
