Default What headphone set-up do you have?

    Hello,

I'm curious of the set-up other torrent invite members are using to enjoy their music. I'm sure there are tons of people here that are very interested in music, especially good quality (recordings and such) music. I have recently gotten more serious about my audio equipment and wanted to share what I am using:

NuForce UDAC-2 running out of Macbook pro.
    Little Dot MKIII headphone amp.
    Beyerdynamics DT990 600Ohm version.

This set-up is a huge step up from my previous one (cheap IEM) and has really brought an entire new dimension to my music. Everything is more enjoyable and I can actually clearly distinguish all of the instruments and really hear the music as it was meant to be heard.

I'm just curious about your set-up. What headphones do you use? Any amps or dacs? Post your favorite set-up here and share.

Well, for my desktop, I have the Logitech Z-5500 sound system. I have them connected via optical cable from an Asus Xonar card. Headphones are pointless on that.

When I am on the go for my iPod or laptop, I use my Ultimate Ears triple.fi 10. Walking around at school, sometimes in lecture (lol). While a headphone amp would be nice, I like have a small device, and the headphones do most of the work.
When I am on trips (road, airplanes, ect) and longer comfort is more needed, I have some bose tri-ports. They are probably the weakest part in my sound lineup.. I eventually plan on buying a nice headphone amp, and some Seinheiser HD series over the earphones. Probably get the HD598's. 300-350$ is usually what I limit myself to when buying headphones.

All of my music is mp3 V0, or 320kbit. I've been thinking about going flac, but I don't see the point, as I need mp3's for my iPod. (fuck apple and their inability to support flac)

Anyways, thats what I got. It's a nice set-up, a few pieces missing here and there, but plenty of power and clarify for me.

I am a drum and bass and dubstep person, so I got some Hippo VB IEM's after reading about them at Head-fi.org or whatever it is.

They are pretty good. Like having a subwoofer in your head.

Those are some very nice IEMs, and overall great set-up. I can't agree more that for portability and discretion, nothing beats IEMs. I was actually very interested in getting a descent pair of those, but when I auditioned some open headphones at a local audio store, I was blown away and had to get a pair.

Sounds like your next purchase will be a good one, the Sennheiser's your looking at seem pretty decent. You may want to look at the HD600 too considering your price range.

Yeah thats why I use Songbird on my computer, it can natively play FLAC files. I don't tend to use my headphone with my iPhone since they are so difficult to drive, and I mostly listen to my music at home.
To be honest I can't tell the difference at all between 320 and FLAC, the only reason why I preferably download FLAC right now is so that I can easily convert to a lossy format that fits my needs without the fear of losing anything in sound quality.

Never heard of those, but have to hand to head-fi.org for their awesome community. They really helped me out choosing my headphones as well.

If your interested here is one of the reviews that I read about my IEM's.

    Hippo VB (Variable Bass)

Enter the Hippo VB. They have the deepest bass of the bunch, or at least appear that way because they

lack a distracting midbass hump. Their bass is also quite controlled and rich in texture, more like a

good full-sized phone, and clearly performing way above its price range. Dare I say it? … Ok, here we

go: their bass is more or less as refined as the one coming from the $1150 UE11 – but the VB put less

weight on midbass and provide more real sub-bass, so they win. At the same time they also have the

best clarity of all five phones in this review. That’s quite a feat, not a lot of IEMs can pull that

off easily. Their midrange appears linear, without peaks and valleys, and it’s “lush” and “sweet” like

the Shure SE530. Their treble can be a tiny bit harsh at times, same as the other phones reviewed here

    – but it’s not overly distracting. Since the VB have open sound canals, one can stuff some foam,

cotton wool, or similar materials in it to tune the treble response to one’s liking. All in all the

Hippo VB are like beefier, more “substantial” Head-Direct RE0 with better bass, more or less equal

midrange but slightly less refined treble – and they’re perhaps a full step up from phones like the

Atrios. The best, albeit a bit far-fetched, comparison I can think of is that the VB sound like the

Ultrasone HFI-780, but with more forward sounding midrange.

I also have a cowon J3 player on order because It can play FLAC and has amazing EQ and everyone says its awesome lol.

Thanks, they were definitely worthy of the investment. I love the things, it's like having a high end stereo in my head. The sound really good with an iPod touch - and even more amazing on my Asus laptop. The mid-range treble can be a little overpowering at times, and I find myself going through a foam set every 3-4 weeks.

Yeah, I have been reading up on the HD series for quite some time. I'd even consider getting the 650HD's if I can find a nice deal. (under 400$) It would be nice to have some awesomely awesome over the ear headphones. But yeah, the 598's or the 600 for sure.

Mhmm. I don't really notice the difference between FLAC and 320 either. It's really high quality, and at less than half the disk space. If my collection was in flac, it would probably go from 140-150gb to 400gb.

If you like songbird then you must give MusicBee a try. I used to love Songbird, but it became too bulky and slow for me. I discovered MusicBee and made the switch. Never looked back since.

On topic: I love my Klipsch Image S4.

Pretty interesting deal! Seem like the opposite of the 70 dollar apple ear buds which are seriously lacking the in the bass department but have some of the cleanest and best defined mids for their price range.

I never looked into it but the possibility of playing FLAC is pretty sweet, makes getting the highest quality a non-issue.

Yeah keep an eye out for good deals on the 650s, I've only heard rave reviews and they would be a very solid headphone.

Never heard of it but may have to give it a shot. The reason why I switched to songbird was to allow FLAC playback without any conversion. Yet I immediately noticed that everything was less smooth than itunes, some stuttering in the scrolling as well as in the search. Hopefully MusicBee will fix this issue :)

Never personally heard the Klipsch S4, but I'm sure they sound infinitely better than bottom of the range IEMs.
