    Yea folders are better IMO.

This is how I do :

Music genre => "subgenre" => Artist / Compilation series name .

If you don't like iTunes, you can also use SongBird which is, for me, a better version of iTunes.

And as of organization, I let iTunes do its thing, as I have a massive collection of bootlegs/live's/compilations and I can't be arsed to catalog them myself :P

Mediamonkey has a really good auto-organize feature. You just have to add all your music to the library, select it all (ctrl + a), choose auto-organize, select where you want it and the structure you want it it (I normally choose <artist>/<album>/<title>) and click auto-organize. :P

I have about 9GB of music, I always name my files:

    Artist Name - Song Title

and just have them all in one massive folder

    I orginize it by genre=>artist/album
Carefully edit everything with MP3Tag and always check for transcodes before adding to the collection

I can't understand organizing by genre. It's such an arbitrary label, and so little music fits comfortably within one genre. I generally use one directory per album, named Artist - Album (Year).

I don't use the file system to find things anyway though. I just have it all loaded into foobar2000's library and search from there.

    Code:
    Archive\Music\<artist> - <album>\<track#>. <artist> - <title>
    Code:
    Archive\Music FLAC\<artist> - <album>\<track#>. <artist> - <title>
    Example:
    Code:
    Archive\Music FLAC\The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die\02. The Prodigy - Omen.flac

For editing or adding details I use Tag&Rename and AudioShell.

I mostly use Windows Media Player for playing music but for flac I use foobar2000 or Winamp.
