    Introduction

I'm making this thread with the goal of providing a way for all music lovers in T-I to discover new music and to recommend new music to members who are recently interested in a certain genre or even perhaps music in general.

This thread is NOT for file sharing, but to recommend artists that are otherwise obscure to other people, so that they may form their own opinion about that particular artist. Hopefully they will enjoy their new discovery and share it with other people.

How can I contribute to the thread?

There's two ways you can do this; By Requesting or Recommending.

    Requesting

Make a request when you're interested in discovering music of a particular genre or sub-genre. This will give the other music gurus an idea of what your interests are so that they recommend music that is suitable to your taste as well as helping others to not waste time recommending something that you might not like.

    Recommending

Reply to a request by recommending artists based on the criteria provided by the requester.

    How do I request?

Simply type "Requesting" in your reply followed by the genre(s) you're interested in. You can be as broad or as specific as you'd like.

You can also leave a note with additional information, such as other criteria, or how much knowledge you have in a particular genre. This can be useful if you're already familiar with more mainstream artists but instead you're interested in discovering more obscure ones.

    Example of a request:
    Requesting: Polka!

I'm new to polka but I've heard some polka before (the neighbor plays it all the time and it sounds funny). Can you recommend me some polka?
    How do I recommend?

Always quote the requester so it's easier to tell who you're recommending the artist to. It is also helpful to include some information about the artist. The information you provide can include, but it's not limited to:

    • Artist Name (duh!)
    • Any particular albums
    • Some information about the artist (History, Bio, or if you're feeling lazy, a link to a wiki article.)
    • Ratings
    • Any other relevant information
You can also provide a YouTube link to one of their songs or the artist's YouTube channel if available.

    Example of a recommendation:

I hope you find this polka to your liking!

    Artist: Loituma
Info: Loituma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is the first polka I've heard!

Btw, here's one of their songs, it's called Ievan Polkka, enjoy!

Please DO NOT post links to files, torrents or any other download sites.

    Disclaimer/Closing notes

Keep all discussion civil. This is not a thread to discuss what genre(s)/artist(s) are(is) the best, or to bash other people for liking a particular genre/artist. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, music taste, etc.

If you don't like an artist recommended to you, don't be rude about it. This also applies if someone didn't like an artist you recommended.

I don't mind if leave miscellaneous comments in this thread as long as they're relevant to the purpose of the thread. Please abstain from posting recommendations without requests. There are plenty of threads in the music sub-forum for that.

I will leave all Thanks-giving to your discretion.

And finally, if someone has any suggestions about how to improve this thread, please don't hesitate to reply or PM me and I will consider it and change it. For Mods, if I missed something that you want me to add/remove/change please let me know or feel free to make the change yourself.

I decided to add my request in a separate post so other people don't have to quote the whole original post. Mods, feel free to delete this post if you don't agree with it as it is not my intention to double post.

    Anyway,

Request: Death Metal, Progressive Rock/Metal, Jazz, Video game music

Death Metal: I recently got into Death Metal thanks to Opeth. So far the only bands I've heard are Bloodbath, Cynic, Quo-Vadis and Spawn of Possession.

Prog Rock/Metal: I'm familiar with most mainstream stuff, like DT, RUSH, YES, Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull. etc. So far the most "obscure" band I've listened to is Anglagard. I'm looking for something similar to Anglagard.

Jazz: I like jazz but I'm not familiar with any particular artists.

As for video game music, just recommend me something that feels epic. I'm familiar with Jeremy Soule, Nobuo Uematsu, Jesper Kyd and Akira Yamaoka.

    Thanks!

here's some ideas for some of your requests.

    Metal:
    Burzum
I like their first couple of albums the best, but the recent ones are good too. The band has a CRAZY backstory, which involves one of them murdering the guitarist from the band Mayhem. You can read about it on their wikipedia page here.

    Prog:
If you're looking for some alternative stuff that is inspired by the bands you mention above, I would look at Deerhoof. Their first few albums are great, one of my favorites being Apple 'O. You can read a review of that here. I also love the record Milkman and Reveille.

    Jazz:
Check out Cannonball Adderley. Especially his stuff from the late 60's and early 70's. Very groove-oriented and accessible for those new to jazz. As far as modern jazz goes, I would look into Medeski Martin & Wood & Soulive. Both are more jazz-funk fusion but, again, a good introduction to the jazz grooves.

Even though they are "mainstream". Tool is one of my favorite bands of all time and has long been considered Prog Rock. I am sure you know of these guys though.

Another suggestion would be recent discovery of mine: The Mars Volta. Two of their albums Octahedron and De-Loused in the Comatorium have been on high rotation in my car.

Here are two songs to give you an idea:

    Request: Cross Over Country

I am not a big fan of Country Music at all. However I recently discovered the band Alabama 3. Their wiki page sites them as being a blend of country, blues, and acid house. So I guess Cross Over Country is a good description. So any music that sounds like Country but truly can not be classified as country would probably make a good recommendation for me.

Death Metal: I can recommend one band for this Death

The guitarist and vocalist for this band and main instigator was Chuck Schuldiner, sadly he died of brain cancer in 2001. Basically he is regarded as a founding father of the death metal genre. Any album is a good one. Coincedentally some members of Cynic worked with Chuck in the earlier years.

I've never been a country fan in any sense of the words, but a couple artists who don't really classify as country have won my heart.

The first is Bright Eyes. The band is on hiatus right now, I believe, so that lead singer Conor Oberst could work on his solo music. My friend lent me three CDs of theirs: I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning; Digital Ash in a Digital Urn; and Cassadaga. The band has an incredibly diverse sound that, if it weren't for Conor's distinct voice, I wouldn't even guess any of the albums I've listened to were the same artist. Beware, though; it's this same distinct voice that lead many to dislike the band. It's what some would call an acquired taste. I'd describe Bright Eyes' sound as folk indie, alt country, a little electronica, and perhaps emo (but please do not let this overused tag scare you off from this music).

    Wide Awake
is my favorite that I've heard. Train Under water is perhaps their most country song from the album. A lot of the other songs sway more towards the folk indie side of the spectrum.[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWTuooIgoBs"] Train Under Water[/ame] Interestingly enough, their next album, Digital Ash, is the complete opposite; instead of folk, they throw in an electronic twist. Even more interesting, both albums were released on the exact same day. You'd be hard-pressed to find anything resembling country on Digital Urn. Check out Take It Easy (Love Nothing) from that album, an electronic, almost-pop single.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3FqHWZ4IIc"]Take It Easy (Love Nothing)[/ame]

And arguably Bright Eyes' most popular song, Four Winds, from Cassadaga, is also their most country-twangy, complete with fiddle solo and bluegrass vocal melodies. If you saw the movie Cloverfield, you heard part of Four Winds during the party scene. Cassadaga has the most country influence, I think, though I still wouldn't call it a country album.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqPVXTOKqqs"]Four Winds[/ame]

And if my over-zealous Bright Eyes pitch hasn't scared you off yet, I have another suggestion. She & Him is another band that falls more into the folk indie category than country, though neither is an inaccurate description of the music. She & Him consists of actress Zooey Deschanel on vocals, and guitarist Matt Ward (who, coincidentally, has a side project along with Conor Oberst and others, called Monsters of Folk, though I digress). Although I've only heard a few things from this band, I've liked it all, if that means anything! Check out their song In the Sun from their second album, She & Him Volume Two.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ3cTwI9bIw"]In the Sun[/ame]

And if none of those did it for you, look up Wilco. I've never really listened to them, so I can't recommend them on a personal level, but they're commercially successful and a few friends have had good things to say about them. But I hope you found my useful!

This is a wild guess, since i don't recognize those bands at all. But for prog i always liked Smile Empty Soul. Especially their song [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7KPL-T11SA"]Silhouettes[/ame]

And if you want something tougher, ill niño was good too. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huf-NhRmvHU"]This time's for real[/ame]

(damn, good too listen again, those two will remind me of my old days forever and ever)

For death metal I recommend Death, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Napalm Death, Kataklysm, Six Feet Under, Behemoth, Vital Remains, Vader, Dies Irae, Decapitated, Nevermore (similar to Opeth).

Prog metal - try latest release of Lye by Mistake "Fea Jur". I also suggest you to check out some mathcore bands, though they're not considered prog, it still has it's feeling or smth., but it's waaay more aggressive. Dillinger Escape Plan is a good starter, but if you want some real mad sh*t, try Psyopus.
