    Default Ugh...Why VLC!!!?

Just looking over a few posts in the music section and kept seeing references to VLC, all my mates say VLC but why is what I dont understand at all.

I mean surely if theres a video vlc can play so can all your other software because its about what decoders you have isnt it?? not the software or am i sort of wrong and right?

And further more it dosnt look that great with that old classic media player look going on....right?

So i ask again why VLC??

Well the thing with VLC m8 is that all the codecs u'll ever need are imbued in the software .. so u dont really need to keep track of the codec packs u usually have to install with other players... VLC plays it all.

Adding to that .. its cross-platform windows/macOSX/linux/unix.. so yeah thats a plus specially bcause instaling video/audio codecs in linux was really a pain in the ass a few years back.

Regarding the look & feel i must say from a design point of view it could be better .. but meh i think everyone will sacrifice looks for funcionality anyday =)

They do have skins ( VideoLAN - VLC media player - Skins ) i just think they are not at the same level as winamp for example but still better than the classic theme :)

VLC because it is not a RAM hog unlike other players. It's simple and is able to play more file types compared to others. Easy to use also

I have videos on my Win7 system that play on VLC but not on any of my other media playback software. I gather it is set up to use its own video playback codecs which do not intermingle with the system-level codecs.

There's 3 other features I find myself using a lot: the ability to easily change audio tracks from the right click menu; the ability to easily crop (I can't believe I still regularly encounter 16:9 sources shrunk down to fit inside a black 4:3 screen...); and the handy tool to change the offset of the audio to video (I have one specific set of files originally from a VCR where they are off by about half a second)

If VLC had a quality winamp style skin, it would be all I used, but it just doesn't have great playlist support for some reason. (I know it's there but it's a little wonky and can't be set up like winamp.)

I'm still looking for a replacement for Winamp. All the new ones have to do the whole 'music library' bullshit...

If you're looking for something with the similar shape and playlist layout try Aimp. There is a free version available for download. Sound quality output is much better than that of winamp. Also you can check foobar player from the original author of winamp. From the base package interface looks old-fashioned, and no support for some lossless formats, but you can fix that by installing plugins.
