Default Any DJ's here on TI?

I have been in the electronic music scene for some time now and I am thinking of getting started as a DJ. I talked to a few of my DJ friends and they say just learn as much as you can from whoever you can, so I feel like this is a great place to do just that. I am hoping to make this thread a resource for other aspiring DJs.

) Introduce yourself - give us a little of your music background/favorite genre/experience as a DJ

) What software/hardware do you use? What advice can you give on getting the right equipment?

) And since this is a torrent discussion site, what kind of a post would this be without a little discussion on where you get your music? What trackers are you a part of and which trackers are your bread and butter for your mix songs?

    I'm not a DJ but I am a raver :)

What type of music are you looking to mix? Electronic? (Hard) -House, -Trance or -Core? Then a CD Deck and Laptop are your weapons of choice. Dub, DnB, Jungle and that lot? Then you're going to be needing real vinyl decks. Some People do mix these with CD's/digital music also... But you probably already knew this :P Be more specific about your musical direction, else people won't be able to help you as well ;)

In terms of music trackers, I use DB9 (deep bass nine): dub/dnb tracker. Many also use TT (Trance Tracker ?) for the more electro-style stuff. What.cd, Waffles and STM are general music trackers. You'll find lotsa stuff on there aswell.

I am definitely looking to mix break and some DnB. Why is a vinyl deck preferrable for that? And I definitely need to check out DB9, I hear nothing but good things.

    I'm a DJ for 10 Years now.

DJing on 2x Technics 1210 and a ALLEN HEATH XONE 32

I'm also using a Midi Controller (Vestax VCI 100) for 10 Months now with Traktor Pro . I would say Midi is the future. Vinyl is getting too expensive for me, up to 8-9€ for 2 Tracks WTF....

I definetly prefer the VCI 100 now. Digital DJing ftw.

my Genre is: Drum&Bass, Dubstep, Breaks, Bailefunk, Electronic.

My friends who DJ say the same thing, glykogen. It's difficult/expensive to find vinyls of the tracks you want to mix, plus they get a lot of their music through torrenting, so it's convenient to have a laptop/midi setup.

So you are just going to be going to be using your laptop then? With like MP3's and such? If so then your doing what I do and I would recommend traktor from propeller head. It's what I'm using and has to be the most awesome program. You can have up to 4 decks going at the same time. A lot of effects, and all that usual mixer stuff. It's much easier to carry around too =) Only downside is unless your laptop is capable of several audio outputs then you'll have to really know your stuff. I like to preview my stuff on my headphones while something else is playing and when it sounds good I use a transition over or just mix it into the current beat and away I go. No delays or anything.

Introduce yourself - give us a little of your music background/favorite genre/experience as a DJ
My name is the R3dRav3r. I only do local stuff for friends in general no big time stuff...then again I like to go out all out on the parties so that's debatable.

What software/hardware do you use? What advice can you give on getting the right equipment?

My recommendation would be the software traktor by propeller head would be a good start and not too big a learning curve. I personally use a seperate mixer more as an amp after my laptop so that I can control the master volume easily and get a decent amount of power in. Other equipment after that is just the sound system which I use whatever is available and then there are my lights :D but we won't go there.

what kind of a post would this be without a little discussion on where you get your music? What trackers are you a part of and which trackers are your bread and butter for your mix songs?

TranceTraffic, Elektronik, and some times waffles for the obscure stuff.
    Retired and happy :)

Well my one friend who mixes a lot of break uses a 2x cdj1000 mk3 and a xone 92. I would be using that probably with a laptop, provided I can get the money :O

My mate DJs DnB and he swears by vinyl, but I guess he's just old fashioned like that ^^ It's expensive, but in the UK tracks are not really that hard to find... I guess ripping tracks to a CDJ-Deck is easier and more cost efficient :) You're probably right and it is the future, but I think it's cool how vinyl still separates the old-school bass-sector from the rest of the high-treble scene.

Yeah, however vinyls are pretty hard to find and expensive in the US. Especially with all the digital releases coming out nowadays, I think I'll sacrifice a little sound freedom for a track library.

    Hi,

I'm not a Dj (yet), But I'm a producer and some bosses have seen potential in me and interested in giving me chances to release my track and giving me training for upcoming gigs soon~ =)

I'm actually a graduates from Music Production Engineering, at 1st I'm a drummer for a band then turned into Trance lover and now listen and play House, Electro, Mash-up and House Remixes RnB~

Currently Practicing Dj-ing with Traktor and Serato using a Controller keyboard and Computer KEyboard shortcut. (Coz haven got gigs so didn't have the $$ to afford a proper equipment, but already happy enough for the result I'm making =D)

I like playing around efx, loop and hot cues. As my personal view for Dj is giving the crowd the maximum impact and feel for the music as much as possible and enjoying the party =)
