I dont know about being better or what not, but alot of members at what.cd like to use eac or dbpoweramp

I like eac cause you can tweak it to try to get it as clean as possible, plus it gives you a log telling you how good your rip is compared to a database of other rips..
    db poweramp does the same

My entire music collection (110GB) is in 320kb/s MP3 (apart from the odd album that's impossible to find higher than 192 or 256), and a few V0 rips aswell. I'd love to have my entire collection in FLAC aswell (or the real CD's lol), but at the moment I'd prefer to get new music rather than re-download everything I already have.

The other problem I have with FLAC is it's lack of embedded metadata, I'm a bit obsessive with how my music is organised and load all my mp3's into mp3Tag to manually change the metadata.

I think for me it's more about the ability to convert from one format to another. Who's to say that in four years they don't come out with a new codec that drastically reduces file sizes without limitations in quality? Being able to keep everything I have without dragging out the CD's is why I use it.

You can convert FLAC to ALAC and have the same quality. I have ALAC files on my ipod, and they play smoothly. You can use tools like DBpoweramp, or BonkEnc Audio Encoder. I use the latter.
