Default What do you think of my custom made guitar?

just built a new custom ibanez swirl guitar. its got dimarzio crunchlab/area67/liquifire, a prestige neck, and an edge trem. what do you all think? building another one in green and black with a maple neck. maybe some better pics if someone really wants to see it. its not perfect but its got a lot of soul

It looks quite good although a higher res pic wouldn't hurt. Did you purchase the parts separately (neck, bridge, body) for the purpose of putting a guitar together or did you combine combine several guitars into one and then did a custom paint job on the body?

I was considering building one myself but will probably get my hands on one of the RG Prestige guitars and may swap out the pickups if the situation calls for it. Less hassle for me that way and nowdays I need to spend more time playing music then fiddling around with my gear.

yea i bought everything separate (body neck bridge pickups tuners ect) then put it together. there is a lot more things to buy when building from scratch than you would think. the body didnt have clear coat so i did that ,then sanded and buffed, then drilled holes for pickup wires. i dont know if i would reccomend doin this because its A LOT of work and for a beginer you cant expect it to play as good as a professionally set up guitar. in my case i put a prestige neck on, but the neck pocket isnt big enough for a prestige neck (only by a small ammount) so the neck pocket actually split quit a big piece off when i forced it in. if your going to put a prestige neck on a non prestige body you have to sand the pocket first. also i was inexperienced in clear coating and it shows. in the end it cost me a less than a top of the line prestige guitar, but doesnt play as nicely still doin some tweaking tho. my current project has my hopes higher. one thing i can reccomend is watch out for prices on evil-bay, i wont say the name but there is a guy selling out of michigan that prices things way too high. you can easily spend twice as much on buying used parts separetly than if you bought a similar used guitar. so if your just looking to customize u can find some pretty cheap used guitars then swap pickups as you said (i think your amp is the most important thing tho so if uve got a crappy amp, dont waste your money on pickups) any ?'s ask away

Looks good enough. How does it sound/play though? I'm a musician so get as technical as you wish.

i still have to pound the floyd rose anchors in further because theyre not in far enough for the action to be good, but it sounds good. in my opinoin the most important thing about tone is your amp. i really like the liquifire neck pickup. most my other guitars have emg's in them so the crunchlab doesnt sound as punchy, but thats comparing actives to passives. my next investment is going to be a mark v. just gota sell my liver to get it tho

looks cool from what i can see from the pics , i have an ibanez prestige 3120 , had it for 7/8 year now , and have had a lot of other guitars within that 7/8 period , but i have always stuck with the ibanez , the stock pickups (dimarzio) are high gain enough i think , even vai has lower gain pickups than what people may think . i also have a kramer stagemaster from the early 80's , just one pickup , one volume pot , and no tone control !! pure rock ya socks of guitar , although i am going to put a push pull coil splitter/volume pot in , just to give me a single coil type clean when i need it .
I run through a Blackstar 100watt ht stage head and a 1960 marshall 4X12 , gives me all the sound scapes i need (for this current band anyway) i replaced the pre-amp valve with vintage mazda 12ax7's and a mullard ecc82 , and this head now sounds even better , next step is to purchase some mullard el34's (not cheap) for the power stage , and i'll have an unbeatable sound .
I've always fancied making a frankenstein guitar from other donor guitars !!! watch this space !!

i think a one pickup guitar can look pretty cool, but ive always thought that if im spending so much money only the thing might as well be able to get the most out of it, althugh 75% of my playing is with the bridge

yeah i got the kramer really cheap off a member of the band , so i got a good deal with that . I wouldn't usually go out of my way to buy a one pickup guitar , but i just couldn't let this one slip by , it has an awsome neck and action too , better than the ibanez's wizard neck !! I'm also thinking about putting a brass block replacement under the trem , or maybe even titanium , but titanium is way expensive . Have a look on floydupgrades.com
