What sort of contests are there for musicians?
Are there any projects like open source games that would need a composer who works for free?
    Any more ideas?
    Better sources of inspiration?
Maybe watching silent films and composing background music for them, then what should I watch?
    Please, all help is appreciated!

Interesting, got to give it a try, though I've already done the cleaning and I've shut down my telly, the phone won't bother me, hardly know how to user it and no one ever calls me, but unplugging my internet - that part is really tough as a heavy torrent user, at least right now with the freeleech on Waffles that is.

I am somewhat of a composer myself with a bit of similar attitude as you (only compose for myself and the people closest to me - at least so far). I used to be much more creative, when I didn't have as many tools, synthesizers and applications to play with. I seem to have found some of my creativity back after starting to compose again on iOS devices (preferably my iPad but even the iPhone is ok) - I prefer to do this outside in a nice landscape on my own. Just the groundwork. All the details will have to be fixed later. I do this to force myself to go back to basics, so to say - to put clear limits on what I can do and to actually help me focus on my ideas, and the composition itself more.

The iPad's battery time is ok for me. For the iPhone I bought a separate battery pack.

Inspiration is something which you cant pursue. It's something which automatically come to you in your everyday life.
Said in another way: Let the things that affect your life be your inspiration.

As a quotes states it: "Sometimes inspiration comes when you least expect it"

I know this may not seem very helpful to you, but people can't advice you on how to get inspiration.

You just get it from family, friends, nature, society etc etc... in your everyday.
