Default How has your taste in music changed over the years?

I was one of those kids who was drawn into the mainstream pop, rap, and hip-hop. I was never really into anything else.

However, now as I have grown older, I have found that I my music preferences have drastically changed and am more open to new types of music. I still listen some of that mainstream pop and rap, but now I find they have to relate to me in some way or have a deeper meaning than just drinking, fun, sex, and money.

Most of the music I listen to now are bands and artists like:

The Fray, Coldplay, Lifehouse, Band of Horses, OneRepublic, The Script, Keane, Matchbox, Theory of a Deadman, Incubus, Adele, Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, Rob Thomas, Eminem and many more.

If you have listened to their music you might agree that many of them write very meaningful songs.

In the end I find that my personal life dilemmas (mainly dealing with family) have shown me another side of this world, and has opened my mind up to many new things including great music.

Maybe some of you have gone through some struggles yourselves or have just openly changed your music preferences for other reasons.

Whatever the case may be, it would be great to know how and why your music preferences have changed.

I think that these are the pioneers of pop music and rap
And these are the kings of the world at that, but let's clarify something
Log in DJ in the world of music from the last period house & Techno
Impact too much on the pop and rap

I really, really, REALLY disagree with Eminem, Avril and Adele being "pioneers" of Rap and Pop when Gangstarr, Craig G, Kool G. Rap, Run DMC and Michael Jackson were doing those genres before those people were ever born.

And yes, everyone's interests change. I listened (and still do) to Marilyn Manson, Metallica, Slayer, etc growing up but I have broadened my horizons musically (somewhat due to the internet) to include anything from Perry Como to Radiohead to Tyler, the Creator.

I think the older I get the more open-minded I become. For example, there was a period in middle school where all I listened to was Nirvana or Nirvana-related bands (Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, AiC, L7, etc.). Now I like all kinds of music (ex. I'm a big fan of the Temptations) but I still make "mistakes" every now and then. When I was in college I went through a quick jam-band phase. I can't believe I got suckered into that. I like what jam bands are about: lots of improv/jamming out, different set-lists all the time, (usually) strong technical skills, etc. and I'm all for love and peace but the way they go about it, like Umphrey's music makes me sick. Grateful Dead is about it for me in that area. However, I've been listening to metal for over 15+ years now and I still love it (of course there's plenty of crap but in general). I thought I might mellow out more as I get older and maybe I have but I think I still listen to just as much if not more heavy stuff than back in the day.

I got my first (64MB!) mp3-player in the year 2000, right about then I starter to "listen" music, rather than letting a bad radio dj select the tracks for me.
I remember that at first there was a huge mess of Nirvana, some local punk bands (from Estonia) and even Madonna - What It Feels Like :D and some german house/trance producers like ATB, Paul van Dyk. I really enjoyed their live mixes
After that I had my KORN phase from ~2003 to 2006.

Now it's mostly DnB, Nu-Metal, Post-Hardcore, jazz etc. (kind of a wide range).

I used to listen to mainstream hip-hop and rap about.. 10 years I ago I think. That lasted for about 1 and a half years, then I switched to pop/house/trance, anything popular I guess which lasted for more, I think about 2 years. Then I had a short period in which I listened to Romanian hip-hop/rap. Then I switched to rock and anything related (indie rock/punk/some metal) and have been at it ever since. Now I can't stand anything else and I find myself thinking poorly of people that listen to popular music/hip-hop and which feel strongly about it (I know I sound like some hipster asshole :p but it's just thinking and only music-taste-wise) - which I guess it's a radical change in music taste over such a short period of time

Started off young loving pop and easy rock. As I got older I transitioned toward techno, heavy rock, and dance. As time passed by I ended up only listening to metal and rock for four years. These days with access to some of the better music trackers, I'm a fan of it all since I'm being exposed to so much. I can appreciate most genres however I often stay clear of any type of 'rap' that has been released in the last eight or so years.

I simply find that with time I can listen to more and more types of music and enjoy it regardless of genre. I'm already at the stage where I can listen to almost any genre, I must admit I do find some types of metal very, very hard to listen to. For instance doom metal and thrash metal. I also can't stand anything in the top 40 as I believe most artists in that category (with exceptions) are careerists more than they are musicians or composers. I find that over time I can also listen to a lot more 'difficult' music, in that you need repeated listens and an open mind to understand them. Some types of electronic music are like that.
