I listened to metallica and such when I was in middle school and didn't understand why other people liked music so much. Eventually I found that I just don't like that sort of shit, lol.

well, when I was 16 I listened to metallica, guns n' roses, aerosmith...ok: hard rock and metal, basically. Now, at 29, I'm more involved with alternative/noise bands, something like Sonic Youth, Nick Cave, Radiohead and stuff like that. I'm in love with post-rock, actually (mogwai, explosions in the sky).

and then there's the classic rock. Pink Floyd, at first. and then led zeppelin, doors and bla bla.

I think I did this backwards. When I was in my teens, I wanted to be an artist. All the music I listened to had to be avant-garde stuff (I was a big fan of The Residents, in particular). I wouldn't touch anything mainstream. Over the years I became a lot more open-minded and started listening to more pop and rock music, as well as folk, bluegrass, Celtic, singer-songwriter, and lots of other genres. I think my 16-year-old self would be horrified to see me listening to Regina Spektor.

ahahaha, yeah...and my 16-year-old self would be horrified to know that now I'm appreciating Guns N' Roses Don't Cry covered by Mogwai

anyway, even if you did it backwards, there's one thing in common: when you grow up you became more open-minded. now I can still listen to old hard-rock/metal/easy-listening-stuff (maybe now I understand what is good and what is shit ), but I'm more opened to new music of all genres.
